RPM's at 70
I am in the process of looking at new trucks and would like some ground truth on RPM's at 70MPH with the 48RE and 4.10's and 3.73's and also the same for the new 6 speed `with 3.73's and 4.10's. It is probably going to be awhile before I pull the trigger on a new truck, but I want a 3500 DRW Quad cab. I will be toting an in the bed truck camper and my Jeep and trailer behind the truck on weekends, but I want decent mileage when the truck is unloaded during the week.. Anyhow, stock size tires are going to be used, so I wanna keep the comparisons even. Thanks a million. Scotty

About 2100 with 285's and the speedo reads dead nuts according to a GPS and the little police radar check points along the highways. This is with a NV5600 six speed.

As above, Just under 2000 at 70 MPH with 3.73's and the 48RE. Millage depends on road conditions, windy etc but get between 18-21 now with 25000 miles on truck empty. With 5er goes around 11-14 range and tow at 65 mph usually.

2000rpm = 78mph

So, just to get this straight, a 6 speed (G56) with 3.73's is right around 2200 Rpms, and a 48RE with 4.10's is 2200. A 48RE with 3.73's is about 2000 Rpms. I imagine a 4.10 geared G56 would be around 2400 RPM's.. So, about the only combo I don't really want is a G56 with 4.10's which seems like it would be too high for everyday driving, as I will not be pulling everyday. Anything under 2200 seems to be decent for mileage, but the 48RE with 3.73's seems like it may be the best, but since it is an automatic, the stick may make about the same mileage since you will have a little less driveline loss.. Anyhow, if you guys have any kind of mileage figures that would be cool too.. Just looking to get something that does the towing well, and does get decent mileage driving back and forth to work also.. Scotty
OH, and if you have mileage figures for a 3500 DRW that would be all the better. Just looking to get a decent idea of what kind of mileage I could expect. Scotty

Pulling what you described a auto with 4.10s is the way to go.If ANY hills,mountains or switch back roads you probably would regret 3.73s.My neighbor does with his 48re 3.73 dually.Unless running 70 plus its NOT in the sweet spot.Makes hilly terrian and switchback roads uncomfertable to drive.Resale also.I know if buying a USED dually I would NOT consider one with 3.73s unless with G56 trans.

Good deal, that is what I was thinking, either a 48RE with 4.10's or the G56 with 3.73's. Either of those would be nice combos. Hopefully with that gearing setup, I should still be able to get over 15mpg and hopefully a little more, since I don't really try to drive much over 65-70 most of the time and usually tow right around 60-65..
