I would just rent a press. Cost me nothing to borrow, but rent I would think like $5. Makes life so much easier. I have not tried without it. But it requires a lot of force. Good luck.

I highly doubt you will get them out without a press. Mine were seized in place and it took me about a week to get them out. I had to do everything under the sun. A combination of heating the knuckle with a torch, while having the press in place as tight as I could get it, and beating on the heated knuckle with a sledgehammer finally caused them to pop loose and come out. The first thing I did after they came out was put anti seize on the new ball joints and in the ball joint holes in the knuckle. Good luck.

work smarter, not harder
Start with the puller/press, at least to get some preload on that thing, after a good dose of Kroil to help... come back after a cold one (to boost your courage) and swing the baddest BFH in the toolbox.
Tip: if you drink TWO cold ones, you'll be ready to wield the two-handed BFH

rented a press from autozone(free).used a breaker bar and a little muscle and they poped right out.about a 4 hour job.ball joints(4) and both u joints.tie rods this weekend with allighnment.
