Seems to be a reoccurring theme here. The faster one drives, the lower ones mileage is. The Cummins seems to have a sweet spot at about 2000rpm give or take a bit. You also need to remember that on gassers, trucks and cars included, sticker highway mileage is figured at 55mph I believe. So if we are getting 18-20+ on the highway at about 70mph with our 7500lb+ trucks we are doing pretty darn good IMHO. I hope I am correct at the 55mph figure!!!

i have the same problems as dss667 which i cant say is a problem. If i stay at 55-60 i can get 20-22 20 being constant and ive calculated a 22 once. It was just a 200 mile drive from Mason CIty IA to Des Moines and back. If i gu much over that then it drops down to the 17s 16s,, but My old daily driver 1500 got 16 going 55 with a tail wind, and this truckk will haul lots more than she ever dream of. Im not so sad,

Im not SO leary on fuel pri9ce either. I hear some of the new gassers can get high teens on the road ( 1500 4x4s take your pic on the brand) But my experience i was in the 12-13 as a constant

1000 mi / 13 mpg * 2.05 gal is 158 for that 1000 mi

1000/ 17 *2.12 is 124 for the same trip. Driving 65-70 is where i see those MPG figures. So i save 25 buckks, Now when i bought the truckk diesel was bout 20 cents cheeper than gas, So that justified the new diesel. ( have a 99) but now id never pay it off daily driving. Thakfully itll pay itself off on resale

My 03 got 16/21 my 05 gets 11/16 thats a bitter pill to swallow. They definitely did something on the 05's that has hurt mileage.

first tank 16.3 MPG combined city/highway.
second tank 18.2 combined city/highway.

I couldn't get 16.5 MPG on my 99 even on a good day.

Normally don't check mileage unless I am making a trip for work. When doing this I tend to run a max. of 5 to 6 over the posted speed limit with means about 75 or 76 in Michigan and 70 or 71 in IN. Not trying to be a speeder but if I run lower than this I get passed by the majority of the people on the expressway.

Last time I checked I got around 18.5 running unloaded.

I have just over 43,000 miles right now.

Just turned 30 k this weekend and seem to get 17-18, two lane ,up and down hills, at 65mph.
Towing the 13k 5er, 70/30 mix, highway/city , running 60-64 mph, got 11.5. I think I could get that towing # up some on a longer run (only 300 mi. this time). Don't do much interstate driving, empty, so I got no numbers!

With 430 miles on the trip odometer, my overhead is currently reading 19.3 with winter fuel. Since reflash, it has been consistent with hand calculation. 250 miles were highway. The remainder to and around town. (I live two miles out) . I keep rpm's under 2K and no rapid acceleration. I know that's boring, but I actually like driving that way.

the speed limits may be lower but the driving is most defenitley not slower. get on I95 and if your under 85 your going backwards. the amount of traffic helps mileage a lot these trucks need to be in the draft otherwise the areo will kill the mileage.

My truck now has just over 8,000 miles. Cruising at 70mph with a hi-top topper and a 6-7,000lb loaded open car trailer, my overhead was reading a best of 13.6. But hand calculating showed about 12.7.

When I first bought it and drove it home from Ohio empty @ 5,400 miles with just a tonneau cover, I was getting 16-17 hand-calculating. But the overhead was showing about .6 less!

I'm hoping it will pick up a few after the TSB computer flash, break-in and switching to synthetics. But that will be after 15,000.

almost 33k miles now, drive @ 1900rpm@

bike riding.

Will be leaving this afternoon on about a 1000 mile round trip hauling pipe out I-10 from Victoria to Odessa, Tx. A few pretty good hills and a lot of flat ground. Will be weighing about 26k CVGW. I'll ck the mileage and post it probably Fri. when I get back. Will be loaded both ways.

I have just over 49K on mine and usually average around 18 on my daily drive on state highways. I drive about 100 miles a day with speeds varying from 30 to 45 through the small towns and 55 to 65 on the highway. I almost always obey the seed limits. On interstate I have averaged just over 19 MPG on a 1200 mile trip here in Texas but usually will average in the low to mid 18s depending on wind, hills, and traffic. That was hand calculated and running at 1850 RPM and 70 MPH. Playing with the overhead I have seen it register about 22.5 at 55 MPH but that was essentially ideal conditions - no wind and very little traffic over relatively flat ground. I never calculate in town driving because I don't do a lot of it. In town depending on how many traffic lights I hit the overhead will show anywhere from about 12 to 14 MPG. Accelerating and idling both are killers on fuel economy.

By the way, a set of 285s on your truck will give you an equivalent 3.54 rear end ratio.

Good thread...glad I started it...lol

So would it be safe to say the newer 6.0 HD Cummins engines don't get the mileage of the prior diesels?

Got back last night, the run was 1006 miles, used 83.3 gals. of diesel, mileage was 12.07 mpg. Usual hwy speed was around 68 mph, gross wt. around 26k. That is better than I usually get, but it was a low profile load and almost non stop, all hwy, no stop and go. Usual mileage is 10.5 to 11 mpg.

Filled up yesterday. 19 mpg for around town driving.
Better yet, paid $2.04 for diesel!
