pulse in steering

I have been feeling a slight pulsing in the steering wheel when it is returning to center after making a slow hard turn. It isn't there on the highway at speed or at least I do not feel it.

The power steering fluid is at the correct level and looks normal.

What can I expect to fail and/or require repair? Could the problem become worse to the point of unsafe to drive?

I would check the steering system out first. Have someone turn the wheel from left to right or vise versa lock to lock and watch the tie rod ends, pitman arm, etc. see if you can notice any play. Its a start.

I've just experienced the same thing (I think) with my 2003 4x4. It was the front axle u-joints, both of them. I had felt that pulsing, told the service guys about that when I had taken it in for an oil change, they didn't do anything about it. A couple of days went by, and I started hearing a squeaking noise. Took it in again, and the service manager said instantly "thats the u-joints". Was repaired under warranty - 7 yrs or 115,000 kms.

Good luck

I hope it is something more simple as it just out of warranty at 73,000 miles. I haven't been driving it much in the cold weather, but had it out today for a good spin. It wasn't doing it as bad. Don't know if the outside temp had anything to do with it, it was up to 79 Deg. F. Will check out the u-joints when I get the chance.

Makes me wish it had the lock out hubs.
