Power Steering Question

My truck is getting harder to turn the wheels at a stop. If I increase the RPM it will have power again. I don't see or feel anything binding up. I see a compressor mounted behind the master brake cyl. on the fire wall. Is that compressor known to go out, and have that same issue. I'm guessing it's the booster to the steering.

Thanks!

Here's a free bump. I have the same issue with mine, although it doesn't always do it.

Close to what mine does.

Power steering will be working ok(not very good though) and then come to a stop or parking lot and realize I have no power steering at all. Yeah rev it up and it kind of works better but not much(1yr old hydro boost running syn oil). After hard excellaration and stopping quick, brake pedal is hard then releases and brakes work ok. Can the power steering system get pluged up somewhere? Running 37" tires doesn't help I know. Please someone help!!!

I have that VERY same issue. Right down to the T. The steering is also connected to the brake booster thats why you're feeling it in the brakes. My truck started to make popping sounds turning either direction (sound came first). I had my son turn the wheel while I was lying under the truck. I put my hand on the drag link and pitman arm and I could feel the hard popping coming from the steering gear. My steering gear as of today is at Red-Head steering to get rebulit. FYI.... new ball joints and tie rods, drag links checked out ok. I hope this helps you and I hope my problems are gone when I get my steering gear back. Good Luck

Have you flushed or replaced the fluid (ATF+4) in the power steering pump since you purchased the truck? You may have condensation and an excessive amount of wear metals or debris restricting the screen in the pump. Keep in mind the third gens require ATF+4 transmission fluid in the pump and the second gens require power steering fluid.

Update. I just got my new Red-Head Steering Gear back. I installed it and I still have the same issues. Hard to turn wheel without rev-up the engine. I did find metal pieces when I flushed all the lines and cleaned it. I'm thinking it's now the pump. I feel the steering gear was on it's way out but I probably waited to long and wiped out my pump.

Got my new steering pump. Installed it and ran it for about 10 minutes just to have it fail. It worked great for 10 minutes. I bought a NAPA reman pump. at least it has a warranty. I've been down for 2 weeks and now this. The replacement will be here Monday. If it fails again.... I'm going to go CRAZYYYY!

when you installed the new pump did you lift the tires off the ground first and cycled the steering until all the air was out?

Before I reattached the belt. I turned the pully by hand alot of turns and kept adding fluild until it stopped taking any. Then I cranked a few times and double checked the level. It ran good. I had great power steering and then BANG. no more.

Have a new pump on the shelf and getting ready to change it. Once you have your problems sorted out and have some time, could you please spell out how difficult it was and anything special that needed to be done (plus what NOT to do) to change the pump. It looks hard to get to.

Now that I'm getting really good at removing the pump. to pull it out only took me 15 minutes. It's not as bad as it looks.
1) remove the inner fender plastic wheelwell. This gives you alot of room.
2) Take the belt off the pully,
3) drain the power steering hose from off the cooler Rad.
4) Pliers to unclip the hose off the Res.tank & 18mm wrench to remove the pressure hose off the pump and remove the whole unit out the top.

You'll need a star wrench to take the Res. tank off the pump and the mounting bracket is screwed to the pump. Get yourself a powersteering pully puller. I got mine from Harbor Freight for $24. any Auto Parts store will have it. That is a MUST to remove and reinstall the pully wheel. Note to self... reinstalling,,, You MUST remount the bracket and Res. tank back on the pump before installing the pully.. You won't be able to place the bolt that holds tank on pump if pully is on.

It's not hard but just take your time and don't rush it. It will come out the top with a little TLC. I had to turn the pump with the pully wheel facing the motor so it wouldn't cetch on lines when pulling it out the top.

Good luck!

Thanks for the useful info. Have read in previous posts about how fragile that pulley is so have a new pulley en route to me and will use that rather then try to R & R the old pulley.
