It really depends on who does the painting

From $300 to $10k depending on the shop and location in the country. Your best bet is to call around.

Painting is not the major cost. It is the prep. For example, are you taking the bed off to get the back of the cab and front of the bed done, are you going to paint under the hood (engine compartment), inside doors, and so on. Do you have to do any patch work on the current paint (rust, peeling) and then you have to look at the clear coating process, (time and layers). If you are going to just tape and spray the truck you could probably get away with a cheap paint job for 700 or 800 bucks, but with a good paint job and proper prep you can spend what ever your heart and wallet desire 2K, 3K or more. You just have too many variables in your post.

To do it right with a complete color change I bet in the $4k range.

As a painter myself , anything under 4K would be too cheap....materials alone will cost around a grand for quality paint/clear.

What color is the truck you`re looking at , and what color do you want it to be?

If you want it done right, count on anywhere from 4-5 grand.

extra expense to change colors- door jambs, engine compartment, etc., add lots of work to the job. i'd find a shop you trust, and see if you can work some of the existing color in areas like the engine compartment, into a paint scheme, so it doesn't have to get changed- silver or white wouldn't look so bad with molten red door jambs and engine compartment. sounds like when all is said and done, you might be into the truck for more than it's worth, though.

Exactly what chipmonk said....

The reason I was asking what color it is, and what color you want it ,is because if it was black and you wanted it dk. blue ,or some other dark color, you could get away with not doing under the hood , engine compartment , maybe even the jambs and that would save you a ton of money.

I would look at some two tone options....maybe silver on top (so you can paint the new hood at the same time) and leave the bottom of the truck maroon.

If you did that you could get away with not painting the entire truck , and have the two-tone paint edge sanded down and put a stripe between the colors. You might be able to have something like that done for $1200-$1500.

If someone offers to paint it cheap....RUN.
