I own an 2005 dually 4wd 3500 5.9ldiesel w 46re auto. Have 82k on it and have been hauling a gross combined weight of 23-26k lbs from sea level to 7000 ft in the sierra nevada range last 8000 miles. The 5.9 has no problem with the weight but the trans(4 spd auto is infamous as being the weak link in a superb tow vehicle. Cut to the chase, just dropped tranny last load weighing 25400gcweight 10 k dump trailer overloaded and 14000 gvwr on truck. If I could afford it I would convert to 6 speed manual or 6 speed eisen from 6,7l, anyone know if either are doable and how much labor involved. By the way i get 18 empty or loaded 4000 ibs in bed and long ago discovered hauling a 1200 lb slide in camper may as well be a drag chute. The dually handles like a sports car in a pinch and I could never go back to 2 rear wheels. Rear wheel ratio 4.10 could be 3.73 if i was equipped with 6 speed. fuel savings of 2 mpg. I forgot to mention that the non aerodynamic lines of the slide in camper reduces my mileage close to what 25 k gcvw does about 12-14 on the flat. DonDraper56

 

I am considering a fleet vehicle 31200 miles 2000 34v turbo 6speed manual extende cab (neeeds syncros) I work for the company so have reviewed regular maint records and it drives well. Bed is thrashed so I would remove and place flatbed on it.he I would like to remove body and fit the chassis powertrain under a 50 chevy 4100 dump truck, 22.5 wheels and most important tags on doors staing a 16000 gvwr and 100 hp max, I would need a 4500 dodge to get around 17000 gross v weight. I think now I will be able to fly under radar and have fun building this rig in kalifornia. Not afraid to say I favor seccesion from the national socialist marxist in Sacramento and DC.
