Smile my prebroke-in mileage figures

Went on a 330 mile trip (each way) this weekend. I did the speed limit up there mostly 70 mph and got 17 mpg on the overhead computer. I did not hand calculate this leg. On the way back I decided to keep the rpms at 2000 instead of 2250 that 70 mph requires meaning that I was doing about 63-64 mph. I filled up today and the overhead read 20.1 but by hand it comes to 22.12 mpg. I'm impressed as I only have 2000 miles on the truck. The real key was keeping it at or under 2000 rpm. I said it in another post but was also cool on the way back to look down and see almost 250 miles with the fuel gauge reading full. My previous V-6 Nissan truck never got 22 mpg.

My mileage is not so rosy...

I purchased a '06 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Ram 3500 dually w/ manual 6spd. I bought it a month ago and just past 8,000 miles two days ago (I'm in the transportation business).

Unladen I'm getting 13.5mpg on relatively flat terrain and no headwind. With a 4K lbs bumper-tow trailer I get ~9mpg and with a 20ft goose-neck loaded with ~10,000+lbs I'm down to 7mpg.

These results are lower than an comparably configured '03 & '04...which are getting 18mpg unladen, but with 80K+ miles on the motor.

This is a bit dissapointing given that 5mpg represents a big $$ difference in my line of work. I've been told the mileage will increase as I continue to break the motor in....we'll see.

What type of highway speeds is that mileage for? How much air in the tires?

Remember the higher gearing of the G56 compared to the NV. After 5200 miles, the truck in my sig is getting 18 with no towing, fwiw.

DUH!!

Makes you wonder why you never went diesel before!!!

It only gets better!!!

I'm not looking at much below your figures with over 20k on the ticker. Then again I'm 4x4 1ton 4.10's with an auto! (extra 1000lbs or so)

34 Gallon... Not sure if the longbeds still get the 35 Gallon tank or not...

Took my first long trip w/ the new truck over the Holiday weekend... It was roughly 215 miles each way. With all the highway driving and alot of 4x4 driving while up there (because of all the snow) I averaged 18.42 MPG. Still had over a 1/4 tank when I filled up yesterday at home and had 496.0 Miles on the tank. I've only got a little over 1700 miles on the truck now so I hope it goes up a little more! Overhead is about 2 MPG low...

Mine never, I mean never, got over 18 mpg. Even driving at 60-65 mph it would never see those numbers. Around town mileage was always between 15-16 mpg. My 03 did better than the 05 but still never went over 20 mpg.

I always wonder what is going on when I read this sort of thing. I can get this mileage pulling a 5er.

We just came off a trip this week pulling our 25ft Travel Trailer weights in at 5500lbs, for the first time with this truck, only about 330 miles round trip. The truck has 1600 miles on it and it avg. 12.1, but it gets 15.5 unloaded. But what POWER!!!!!!!!

I've got 4.10s and 315s, NV5600. I've only got 10K on the ticker right now, with about 1000 miles of that towing a ~6000lb tandem trailer with my Jeep on it. I have been getting about 18mpg unloaded now (if I keep it under 70mph) and between 12 and 13mpg towing.

I may be taking an 800 mile round trip towing about the same weigh next week. We'll see what the milage is then

Alright, how are you guys getting this great mileage?

Mine is an 05, dually, auto, 4wd, 3:73 axles, longbed, crewcab, 6000 miles on the odo with a bumper pull sub 10,000 lbs load, and I averaged sub 9 on the overhead 2 different 300 mile round trips to the desert. Unladen is sub 14 on the overhead and I average no higher than 68 mph anywhere on the freeways. Truck is bone stock.

To add to the misery, top speed up the hill out of Morongo into Yucca Valley puts me just at 40 mph and no power coming up the long hill into Morongo.

I gotta say that I quit running the Fords after reading everyone's glowing reports of the mileage and power the Dodges had and so far, my 6.0 liter 03 Ford was performing slightly better. Don't get me wrong, I hated the Ford, so it didn't take much convincing to get me out of it, but I expected more from the Dodge. Am I being a bit optimistic in thinking it should work better and get better economy? Or, do the 3:73's just kill it that badly?

Millage

Well were on winter fuel now so I'm sure my millage sucks but a recient trip of 600 miles I averaged 17.4 mpg. This was with me and my wife, about 600 lbs of her furnature (moving down from home). And this is in Rhode Island and Maine, so I'm sure it's winter Fuel. Towed her car back, on trailer, was around 5,000 lbs, and I got 15. I have 17,000 on my ticker now and I hope I can get around 18 I'd be happy. These new o5's with the injection events and all that, won't get what the other 3rd gens got.

I also run 8oz of power service each fill up (works out to 25 gallons)
