MPG getting better

After getting 5K on my truck the mileage is finally getting to where my previous CTD's were. Last tank was 18.6 as calc'd with fill up to the vent hole, as normal. That was all local metro driving on freeways and city streets, no more than 70 mph and not many foot on the floor passes. I'm getting happy with the mpg, now if only fuel could be $1.50 like the good old days.

BTW the computer showed 19.7, close, but still not very good.

No, I didn't know there was new program out. I like to keep mine as far from the dealers garage as possible so it doesn't get used to being there. If necessary I'll take in and I'm not upset or anything with the dealer, they are really nice people, I just would rather keep my truck in my garage, not theirs.

I'm at about 4900 miles, the last 3 tanks hand calculated at 17 MPG, the overhead displayed 15 MPG. I've got about 75 miles on the current tank and the overhead is at 18 MPG, driving the same roads the same way, so maybe it's breaking in . No changes to programs yet !

When you guys talk about filling to the vent hole, are you actually having fuel come back through that hole or just foam? I noticed when the foam reaches the top, I can keep putting fuel in for a while. Just curious.
thanks

azjeff. What was your mialege when you first got your truck.
another observation that i noticed is that it seems 2x4s get good mialege whether auto or manual.

RonP in order to get an acurate reading with hand calculated mialege it is best to fill up the tank to the neck which takes a while.

2nd fill up (today) @ 610 miles hand = 16.7 and comp = 16.6-7 (had the 18-037-04 TSB done) And I've been standing on it alot, 1/2 in town driving

yzfr6 (what does that mean?) My first fill was only at 95 miles, because I was going to take a little 300 mile trip & wanted to know what the mileage would be. The 95 mile top off was 16.9, 300 mile trip was 17.6, next one was 15.2 and varied from 15 to 18 up until I pulled trailer 2200 miles which was 10.5-11.5. After that the mileage has been a more consistant 17-18 range, babying it. If you like to hear the tires squeel and the turbo whine & feel the torque, your economy will suffer - but sometimes its just worth it.
After driving your truck for a few thousand miles, it will probably increase the mileage, if not then, for sure when it has 8-10K. Get some use out of it by pulling whatever you bought it to pull and that should help.
Yes, it takes a little while to fill if you want consistant and accurate readings. I may be a little extreme. Good luck. Jeff

I only keep track of how many miles I get to a tank. But I drive mine until the little dinger dings. It dings and people ask what that sound is, and I tell them it's the "your booty is goining to boogy" light...... they say "not mine " With my other truck I would push it to 495 miles, and that had me sweating it. I'm working my tail off so I haven't been able to take any road trips yet. We'll see about this truck.

Had a tag hanging on my cig lighter that among other things said that fuel economy won't be realized until 10k miles... Oh, I hope not....

Tschwab - I'm sure mine is one of the 1st 05's and is of the 600# variety. Does anybody know of other changes made with the new program?

Sold a V6 3.0L 2WD Ford Ranger, very stock, single cab short bed to buy my Ram. When I first bought it I was all over the Ranger chat rooms because I was getting 9-10 mpg around town. Everyone said it's because they have the Taurus motor which is notoriously tight. Sure enough after 2-3000 miles I was getting 19mpg. My Ram has about 3500 miles on it, one oil change and the mileage reflash and it shows 15.4 around town, I can't complain about that, especially if it only gets better with time! By the way, used those defrost mirrors this morning, they work fast and great! Go RAM!
