Mounting trailer brake controller

Well I have my new 08 dually now. So where to put the prodigy trailer brake controller? The truck is a Lariet and it has a small opening under the radio that the controller will slide half way into. It could actually be a good workable position but wiring is the problem. My question is, could a hole be safety drilled into the back of the compartment to lead the controller wire harness through. Has anyone done this or are there any pictures of an install. I don't like the controller near the steering column as it can be hard on the knees.
thanks in advance,

How did you lead in the wiresl If you drilled a hole in back was there anything in the way that can get damaged?
thanks

i removed most of the dash and drilled a hole in the back right hand corner. if you dont have sausages for fingers, you can feel back and so you know where all the obstructions are. IIRC there isnt much back there to get in the way. just take your time and youll be fine. i think its really the best place to install it. i hate them by my leg

start from the bottom and work your way up is the only advice i can give. and if it doesnt come off easily, then you probably missed a screw

Mine is on the right side kick panel below the steering wheel.
I thought it would be in my way, but it's not

Mine is there as well. You dont have to remove the dash, just drill the hole in the left hand side kinda at an angle. Once that is done, and you extended you wires, just wrap a clothes hanger around the wires with some tape, and feed it threw. Its pretty easy.

Men, Just pull the rubber inserts out and there are a couple 5/16" bolts holding each piece of the dash in. You only have to take a couple pieces out and then you can route your wires through the back side and then put the dash back together. It's very easy and you don't need to drill holes. I took the hanging mount for my P3 and installed it on the bottom side of the controller and that's how it sits in that cubbyhole under the dash. I used velcro to hold it all in place. Just get the velcro that's made for automotive use and clean the area well before applying it. Works great for me.....

I put my prodigy in the cubby hole in my truck. I removed the rubber insert then with a long 3/16 drill I chewed out the back left hand vertical corner. I was careful not to let the drill poke thru, not really knowing what was back there. Taped the wires in a stepped fashion, so I had no big bulges of tape. and then taped piece of #12 solid copper wire to the lead/longest wire and carefull poked it thru. Once I got my hands on the lead wire, the rest followed easily. Sliced the corresponding corner in the rubber insert and re-installed it.I think it's an excellent place to mount this particular controller.

BroncoHound - Nice.. I thought about that but ended up putting my CB there and mounting the brake controller near my knee.. You can just see it in the pic in this thread https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=201489

Broncohound: That's where I wanted to mount mine, just haven't had the time yet. Currently by my leg using existing screw. How hard was it to mount there. The Prodigy needs more room. Did you hollow out the back? Did you have to take the dash apart? Thanks for any input.

blownsmoke-that's an awesome mount; where did you put the actual CB though?

bytor62-no hollowing or modification necessary. i just screwed the P3 mounting bracket to the back wall of the dash and hooked the module in. i ran the wiring harness up between the panels on the bottom and zip tied them under the dash so it stays put. took me about 20 minutes to install the unit with no dash removal necessary.
