moog upper ball joints-toast

14 months ago- i redid my whole entire front end- i replaced everything except the control arms! went to have an alignment done today and my moog upper adjustable greaseable ball joints are toast! went to have the alignment done because i installed dt profab control arms a week ago. i had no symptoms of bad upper ball joints when driving down the road, but my mechanic showed me. a good half an inch play on both sides! called rockauto.com and they are going to warranty them, but i have to go through the hassle, etc. i have an 1.5" spacer lift and only run 285's. i thought moog would last longer than the factory ball joints! which i got 60,000 miles out of! just thought i would like the carli upper's but i can't justify the cash for them right now with the wife!

If they are the captured king pin design, then they have a good 1/2" of up and down "play/travel" in them brand new.

That much movement in upper ball joint would mean the lower ball joint has separated, You would have very bad vibrations through the truck steering, tires wearing oddly. Like BKC said the upper joints will have 1/2" up/down movement when new no matter what brand. Side to side movement bad. Lower ball joint is the main one to check for up/down movement.
