Modding Stock centercaps for H2's

Does anyone have a writeup or howto on this one? I got the new H2's on, but need to get the centercaps on. My centercaps are 05's. I thought that I could set up my tablesaw and run them through, but it looks too awkward to do without buggering something up or shooting this thing off the sawblade across the garage...Thanks in advance

I double stacked the lug nuts so I could keep the factory caps incase I ever needed them for the factory rims.

But I have read of guys using a cut off wheel on a die grinder to make the cut.

I cut 1" off the hub caps using a dremmel, then cut 1/2 of the edge off the clips using a pair of tin snips. With a 3" t-square set to 1" I drew a line with a fine tipped felt pen. Just held the tip next to the cap and turned the cap, got a perfectly spaced line. Then with a cutting disc, just freehand cut the line, dremmel speed was about half 5-6 range. Took about 5 mins per hub cap to cut the 1" off. The cutting of the clips was even easier, maybe another 5 mis max per cap including filing smooth and rounding the corners.

All in all I had about an hour in the job rounding up the tools, cutting and trimming, putting tools away and popping the caps on. Take your time, steady hand, and you are done in NO time flat.

Double stacking is a good idea. I never thought of that!

I had them on my 03 for a while and cut the caps myself. I tore one up and had to buy an extra set. It looked ok but I wish then that I knew about double stacking the lugnuts. That is much easier.

I did the double stack lugs for a while, but I like the looks of the cut offs better. The don't stick out and the look more factory to me.

I used some blue painters tape to cut mine with a dremel. The tape was just the right width. :-)

take a piece of 3/4" masking tape and put it around the inner edge, take a 3" cut off wheel and put it in the drill press. Adjust the table up to the edge of the tape and it will cut pretty even. make sure you are spinning the cap ona rag on the press table. then cut off the edge of the metal fingers.

lugnuts are expensive, don't need anymore weight on the truck.

Here they are. These are the other design or maybe the 08 design for the H2's I like them and they look clean! I opted to go down to the 295 70 17 Nitto's which are a stiffer more surefooted tire for my liking. The 315's seemed too balloney and with my 3.73's and 48re I didn't want to lug the truck that much with those 35's. Explains why I'm looking for more low end power in other threads!

lol

Another set of lugnuts weighs less than a case of beer!
I think your 1 ton could handle that!

Wheels look good Woody, was wondering idf the new H2 wheels would work, now I know. I imagine the offsets the same as the 'old style'?
What did you use to open the centre hole?

Thanks guys for your replies. Fisherguy, I used what is basically a small router like a laminate countertop router which is variable speed with a 1/2" flush routerbit with a bearing attached to the bottom of it. I set the speed to the slowest setting possible on the router and for lube and cooling of the bit, I just used some airtool oil and dripped it around the surface of the hole that I was going to cut out. That aluminum does cut like butter, so go slow and keep a firm, sure hand on the router so that you don't let it jump. It really did only take about 2 minutes per wheel. I will tell you that doing the hubcaps was not as easy as I though it would be. My hubcaps are chromed and my tablesaw method was not the best way to cut these, because the chrome will flake a little on the cut edge. If they were plastic only, the edges would be much cleaner.
