Millage display on Canadian Truck

When we used the millage per gallon on a Canadian truck does it calculate base on us gallon or canadian because when we hand calculated it is a big difference between the 2. Like 16.5 Miles per US gallon but 19.2 Miles per Canadian Gallon.

Thanks

It would make sense to have a lower mpg with US gallons. The US gallon is 3.78 liters and the Canadian or Imperial Gallon is 4.54 liters. You would go farther per the larger gallon. I don't know which units the truck uses. If it's made to be in Canada then I would guess that they use the 4.54 liter gallon.

The metric or "Canadian" setting doesn't measure in MPG at all...it measures in Liters per 100 KM (L/100KM). Using L/100KM you ideally want to see as low a number as possible for the best mileage as the measurement is literally how many Liters of fuel it takes to go 100km...more fuel equals worse mileage.

If it is set to the Imperial setting (MPG setting) then it is indeed in US MPG (3.8L)

As a side note...the overhead mileage display is not very accurate in these trucks anyways.

The overhead display shows the MPG based on the US gal. In my experience so far it is not very accurate. I always calculate my mpg by hand.

Ok, let's say it is L/100Km. His overhead said 19.2. 19.2L/Km is 12.23 mpg. It's unlikely that he's getting 12.23 mpg. The Imperial System is not the Stand or US system. An Imperial gallon is not 3.8L. An Imperial gallong is about 4.54L and a US gallon is 3.785411784L.

Sorry I stand corrected about the imperial gallon thingy ...however if the setting on the overhead is set to Metric it is DEFINITYLY in L/100km and if in US mode it is DEFINITLY in US MPG, not Canadian MPG....this much I am certain of.

12.23mpg wouldn't be that uncommon a newer engine. Mine was getting mileage like that for a little while. 16.5mpg would also be possible for unloaded mileage, just depends on the circumstances. I was getting 17.5-18L/100km (13-13.5 US mpg) unloaded in my truck for the first 2000km. Now it gets roughly 14.4L/100km (16.3 US mpg)unloaded and roughly 18.8L/100km (12.5 US mpg) towing my trailer. I have excell spredsheets of every fill up if anyone wants to see my mileage since brand new which includes L/100km, US mpg and imperial mpg.

And like I said it (the overhead display) still isn't very accurate either way.....

Millage

Thanks everyone's

It confirm what I was thinking so I am doing 16.5 MPG US hand calculated and my display console showing 18 MPG and 13 L /100 km

So I know now I am just about 2 MPG off on the display

Thanks

2mpg off sounds fairly typical, mine is 1-2mpg off as well from hand calculated.

I am fortunate to have had the 03 and 05 overheads be accurate. Just be sure you fill up your own tank each time, the same way, then you can hand calculate and do comparisons. To convert from US mpg on your overhead, add 20%, and you have it in Imperial mpg. eg.) 16mpg US is 19.2mpg imperial.

I find that the miles per gallon displayed on the overhead (while it is in US gallons, as stated before) is actually pretty close to what I hand calculate with imperial gallons. I am averaging (highway and town) 19.5 miles / imperial gallon, and I have about 25000 km on my 06 mega.
