Question The Mega Question

Looking at buying a MegaCab CTD.
I want the six speed auto, but don't want the emissions crap of the 07-08.
Did they make the auto 6spd with a 5.9 ctd?
Any opinons on what is the best year?

Thanks
John

Nope only the 6.7 had the new trans. My Mom has an 07 5.9 Mega and loves it. The trans in my 08 is so nice though, the milage is just crap!!

Correct. I'm sure someone will figure a cure for the crappy mileage eventually. There are a couple cures out there that are being perfected already.....

Yeah, if they ever figured out a way to bring up the milage and not void the warranty or break the law I would jump on it in a second!!! This thing has more power than I need I just need to not cringe every time I push the peddle down

Save money and buy a used 5.9, then take the money saved and have the tranny built.

How big of a difference is the new tranny compared to the old style.
Has there been any other major changes in the last 3 years?

For the autos in the megacabs, the 48RE has not been the most popular, especially with added power. Some have had it hold OK, some have not. You can make it bullet proof, but it costs some coin. The 68 RFE has been a good trans so far, but you can only get that in the 6.7. I'll be interested to see long term how the new autos hold up. Exhaust brake with the 6.7 is more powerful.

If you want a 6 speed, get a 5.9 with a G56. But realy you will be better off with a 5.9 due to fuel economy and the 5.9 being the tried and true engine.

tranny question

Got an '07 extended cab (not Mega) Big Horn 5.9L they were pushing off the lot at the end of the model year (9/07). Love the truck. Hate diesel prices. It has the 4-speed. A friend who works for a GMC dealer tells me the tranny in my truck is trash and will fail soon enough. All I've read about transmission problems with Rams has to do with 5 or 6 speeds. Any know issues with the 4-speeds?

Are you talking autos? Last few years Dodge hasn't made a 5 or 6 speed auto. 47 RE and 48 RE are 4 speeds, and that goes back a decade. Yes, there have been issues for those trans, especially if you add power. And for the six speed manuals, NV5600 and G-56 have been holding up Good overall. I had a buddy back in the day with the old 5 speed NV4500, but haven't read much about that trans...

You need one with a fully built tranny I know someone's that selling one in the classifieds and is very willing to negotiate.

There were issues with the 47RE, not so much with the 48RE. Yeah, it's a little quirky but it is a tough little transmission, and builds well if you go that route.

3 speeds are all you need around town, and the OD is nice for the freeway.

Dodge makes a 5 speed auto, the 58RFE I believe, but its only available in the 1500 behind the Hemi engine. Knock on wood I have had no issues with my trans and I have almost 88k and I plow with the truck. I added a double deep pan and gauge and service it every year and it has never given me a problem.

I have driven many auto CTDs and every one of them just seems to shift funny. Either too quickly or too slowly. They just never shift when you think they should. The 68RE shifts just perfectly. That is the only reason I got this 08. I was scared of the emissions engine but also scared of getting yet another improper shifting 47re or 48re. I ended up getting this truck so if I had issues the warranty would cover it.

To be honest I leaning toward the GMC right now. It has everything I want and is much more refined inside. The dmax has proven itself to be reliable and the Allison seems stout. The one downfall is the front suspension. If it was a true independent with coil overs my mind would be made up.
