Jerky Steering.

My steering in the last few days has gotten jerky when driving slower than 10mph. Kinda feels like when you are in 4X4 and turning in a parking lot. The steering wheel jerks or pulses .
Fluids all good and can't see any other problems????

Going to the dealer in the morning to find out what's going wrong.

hmm. Same issue here. Came on very suddenly, "pulsing" side to side around low speed corners, not so much around curves when doing more than 35mph. I saw right away the track bar was bad. Fixed that and the pulsing dramatically lessened, but is still noticeable now that i know what i'm feeling for. Someone else driving the truck might not even notice.

Guess its time to check the Ujoints?

Can these u- joints be greased or do they need to be removed?

you would have to remove them to grease them, at which point you may as well go back in with new ones...

I am getting mine done tomorrow for $120 bucks. Remember that the caliper, caliper mounting bracket hub bearing all has to come off first before even getting to the u-joint.

That's pretty cheap, shop rates up here are around $100/hour so I bet it would be double that.
Might as well have a look at the ball joints while you're at it.

We did ball joints wheel hub bearings and ONE u-joint two years ago. At that time the u-joint was fine and it was the firts one he did the driver side was bad so we replaced that one. He does all my front end work along with my parents so we get somewhat of a deal!

Thumbs down Steering Box

Well the dealer tells me the steering box is shot. $600.00 for the part and $280.00 to stuff it in.

your initial description of jerking like turning in 4x4 still sound like u-joints to me but the steering box could also be on the way. I just replaced my gear box last week due to poor return to center and slop in steering due to sector shaft play and leaking seals?? You can try to tighten gear box if its loose.

If your convinced the steering box is shot check these out:

Red head steering gears

They are better than an OEM replacement with over-sized bearings and are only $265 after you return your old one for core refund. Took me less than an hour to change it out and a good part of that was draining and refilling fluid reservoir...

where in BC are you? If shipping is a problem I'm just over the border in Bellingham so may be able to help you out.

Thanks Bradler,

I called them and they have one in stock but he said it doesn't sound like the box to him.

The Dodge dealer said it is for sure the gear box and they told me replacing it will fix the problem. I told them I will do it in the morning with them if they guarantee it in writing. It goes in in the morning and I have a guarantee from them.
