I returned to the dealer, and patiently spoke in words of one syllable, and got the nice man to agree to look at the truck tomorrow, and order the bits for Monday. I still find it annoying that a $695 part destroys itself in 28k miles. Should it become a recurrent happening, I shall look at other ways of stopping the truck.

Changing that belt will be a pain. There is a narrow gap around one of the pullies, and if I recall correctly it was easiest to get the belt over the alternator last.

Be sure to double check that the belt isn't off by one on the crank pulley...

If you were closer to northern Oregon, I could have lent you a belt. For that matter, the dealer here probably would have fixed you up that day...

Had I been back in Washinton, where I bought the truck, it would have been done right away, but when 2500 miles from the place that sold you the truck, you are a problem no dealer really wants to see. I had a problem with a jeep I bought from Cincinatti, when in Oregon - the dealer was friendly until he realized I didn't buy the vehicle from him.

From the Cummins website:

"Comes with a 3-year/100,000-mile (160,935 km) warranty on the exhaust brake assembly and a 3-year/36,000-mile (57,937 km) warranty on all other kit components."

I’m sure the PacBrake and others are good products too, but I’m really gun-shy about warranty issues…. Seems some dealers will jump at the chance to void a warranty. I haven’t decided yet whether to get an E-brake or not.
PacBrake is covered under warranty too. Dodge was installing them when the jacobs was taken off the market because of defects. Also Pacs warranty is the best.

Is there somewhere I can verify this? I'm thinking of getting the Pacbrake PRXB but won't if it puts my warranty into jeopardy. Thanks!

That's my question also. If you check the Jacobs and Cummins websites they both state "the only OEM approved" e-brake. I may call DC next week, as I have their 7 year/100K extended warranty, and would want to know what is covered and what is not, and how the factory warranty is affected (if at all).

The vacuum pump went again, yesterday.. this time, I got about 74,000 miles out of it. The truck is no longer under warranty, so this fix is on my penny...

Reading online, here and elsewhere suggests that I get the cummins part ( their part number) for a lot cheaper.. I will see if I can find anywhere I can get that part for.. Currently in Indiana again, so have to find a Cummins place nearby.

you can not get very long life out of the vacuum pump. get a bd it has considerably more stooping power and the compressor is not as prone to fail or in the way like the pac. will not void the warranty and easy to install. we have had so many vacuum pumps fail i started changing them out to pac or bd on trucks that was working out of town before they failed and i am using the pumps that still work on the in town trucks when they fail. i think i am now down to the last pump and will start stocking a bd for spare

Really simple to replace.

exhaust brake

Maybe I'm lucky. My 03 truck has 112,000 miles on the clock and my e brake is still working great...never had a problem.I ordered this truck new. The ebrake had to be installed by the dealer as the factory wasn't doing it yet. Could it be because I don't leave it on all the time? Anyway it still works great.
