Jake vacuum pump dead

28450 miles... the vacuum pump for the Jake Brake failed. I went to a dealer, and was told that they couldn't do anything for 3 weeks, and that even then, they were not used to the Jake Brake.. So I drove 70 miles homeward, with the stutter of a disintegrating vacuum pump drowning out the sound of the engine.

Anyone any idea how much the vacuum pump is, so I can replace the thing and bugger the warranty.. three weeks without the truck is something that is not going to happen.

I would imagine it is several hundred bucks...

Why not just put the original equipment fan belt back on (so as not to drive the pump), and just live without the Jake until the dealer deals with it?

I would need to get an original belt - the jake was fitted by the selling dealer, and they kept the belt.

When I had mine installed, I made them give me the original belt. They thought I was nuts but...I keep it under the back seat for this very reason.

You can buy a stock belt at napa. I herd those vacum pumps are $600.00 thats one of the reasons i went with a pac brake.

I went to the local dealer, (I bought the truck 2500 miles away..) and found out the pump was $695..... So I bought a belt, and want to put it on, but..... There is very little room, and NO MAP anywhere to see where to route it.. Also, how is one supposed to change the belts - never done one, and can't see a logical approach. All hints, tips and thoughts appreciated.

You should be covered under warranty. I would ask the local dealer to swap belts for you until they can replace the pump.

From the Cummins website:

"Comes with a 3-year/100,000-mile (160,935 km) warranty on the exhaust brake assembly and a 3-year/36,000-mile (57,937 km) warranty on all other kit components."

I’m sure the PacBrake and others are good products too, but I’m really gun-shy about warranty issues…. Seems some dealers will jump at the chance to void a warranty. I haven’t decided yet whether to get an E-brake or not.

MYLASH,

Go to the jacobs site and they have the installation manual as a .pdf file. There is a diagram of the belt routing and a note that the factory belt can be re-installed if the pump ever fails so you can stay on the road. A 1/2 inch socket is all you need to release the tensioner.

I would have to wonder why they are telling you three weeks without your truck. I can have you one tomorrow and back on the road late afternoon. My point being that they are stocked in the Portland PDC which means overnight to dealers. If that was installed when truck was new it is still under warranty and you should not be out anything but if you wanted to do it yourself or take the number to the dealer here it is. 5102084AA and it does list out for $695.00.

You may want to access Jakes website and look for one of their dealers. Another option is the Smartbrake. I have a buddy that is using the Smartbrake instead of the Pac or Jake and he loves it. He said it brakes like the Jake compression brake on the big engines. I don't have a number but I am sure you can find the contact info on their website. I do know that an air compressor and tank is required for the Smartbrake. But from what I understand it is worth every penny.
