Quick question, do you guys want the 4500/5500 dodge to be a light duty platform like the Fords or a medium duty like the chevy's?

They are both medium duty platform's. Ford just put's a pick-up cab on their's while GM uses a medium duty cab.

Cummins has other engines that have been using EGRs. I'm sure they will be a reliable as can be for an EGR.

According to several sources the 4500/5500 trucks are being co developed by Dodge and Sterling not Freightliner. They do exist because a Dodge dealer who is heavy in commercial Dodge trucks in Ohio called me and told me the engineers were testing these and wanted to know if the dealer's back lot was concealed enough to hide these while they performed their checks. He was not even allowed to take pics but said 16000 and 19000 were the approximate GVW specs. 19.5 wheels etc pretty heavy duty stuff. Sterling is also going to sell a version of this truck called the Bullet. They will use a Sterling frame etc with a Dodge cab at least on the Ram models.

Hopefully the EGR thing will be put to bed by low sulfur diesel.

no sulfur=no soot

Definetly the 4500 would compare to a F450. I used to have a 4500, and truthfully, it had a hard time comparing to a F450, I'd of rather had the 450. The F650 Ford is a lot more truck than the 4500-5500 Chevy, at least the 650's I've driven?

Dodge was in the game for many years, they got out because they couldn't compete with Ford,GM, and International. It won't be much different now,no service support to speak of,it takes a whole different service center to support these larger trucks. The only thing Dodge about the trucks will be the cabs, rear-ends,tranny's,chassis,engines will be made by other companies. The trucks will pretty much be a freightliner Business class with a Dodge cab, nothing to get all worked up about.

You better not wish too hard, from what I can read, that might not be far off.

Why else would they make an engine right in the HD pickup power range???? 240 HP, 520 TQ??? Doesn't sound like a big rig to me.

And don't forget, the Semi's are going through the same thing that little pickups are, also. So if reliabilty becomes an issue, things will change. You can't have a semi going through an engine every 100,000 miles. For most truckers that is an engine every 9 or 10 months. So I feel comfortable that Cummins will not put an engine out there that has a short life. They have too much riding on it, as at least (my guess) half or better of their product line is going to change.
