inside cab smells at idle?

hi!just bought a 2003 2500.i love this truck.we have a 2001 3500 and a 1993 3500,all with the cummins.the question i have is on my new truck i have noticed when i am at a light for more than 15 seconds and my heater motor is on,it puts a smell in the cab almost like half burnt fuel and paint?goes away when i start driving or shut the fan off.i know its not the smell of the exhaust.i was concerned because of my 2 small girls who ride with me.the smell is fairly strong.i lifted the hood while running and could smell the odor.i only have about 200 miles on it.could this just be the engine paint burning off or some of the new mechanics breaking in?any help would be great.

I think your smelling the oil. It gives off that smell for a while. About 500 miles or so. Should go away. But will return at oil change.....

;D crankcase exhaust/blowby /draft tube. Normal :'(<br>You can add to the tube and run it back on the frame to hekp reduce the incab smell ;D

Re:inside cab smells at idle?

Could one hook it to the air tubing between the air cleaner and the turbo, and effectively burn the odor as part of the combustion process?<br><br>Why didnt cummins and DC think of this?

thanks for the info!i went to dodge today and asked them.the service guy said they have had some other complaints on this.they said it will go away,as it is the cosmoline and the paint burning in.he said the engines were wrapped in the cosmoline when shipped new.thanks for the info again.

Buick did the turbo motors in the Grand Nationals/T-Types this way. The problem is that along with the odor, inevitably some oil residue will get sucked back into the turbo. This will leave a puddle of oil on the inlet bell of the turbo and can possibly oil up the intercooler. I don't know that this would have an adverse effect on either of those components, but I did notice on my GN that it always had oil residue on the turbo fins until I got rid the mechanism that put the crankcase odors back into the turbo.<br><br>It may work a bit differently on the Cummins, but I'm not sure.

Have never heard of cummins shipping cosmoline packed motors...even new motors coming into a cummins shop are painted with only covers over all openings

If thats true then I just learned something new today ;D

I am not sure about the cosmoline thing either. Mine initially had the oil smell plus what I will just call a new smell. Neither is anything to worry about. It should go away in 300-400 miles. ;D

Re:inside cab smells at idle?

When I was at the Cummins Midrange Engine Plant(CMEP) last summer, the only preventative on the engine applied at the factory is a clear coat sealer. The openings are capped. The engines are crated and shipped to Dodge and the other OEM manufacturers.<br><br>Cummins engineers tell me the reason the engine blow by vapors aren't returned to the intake is because of emmisions. Emmisions cannot be controlled as well by routing the crankcase vapors back into the intake--another variable. They also told me that Dodge says no more open crankcase vaopr by either 2004 or 2005.(I don't remember which year) <br><br>I wonder why Ford/Navistar has been routing the crankcase vapors into the intake system on their diesel engines since the 6.9 evidently without emmision problems? <br><br>peddler

Re:inside cab smells at idle?

My 6.5 chebby turbo-d had the vent go into the intake plumbing between the air cleaner and turbo as well.<br><br>As noted...by others...<br><br>there was always a smear of oil film (not a puddle) on the air intake tubing that trapped whatever grime made it past the air filter. It wound up on the turbo compressor fins and everwhere else.<br><br>The oil residue is a problem as my Mitsu Ecipse GSX turbo has the crankcase vent go to the plumbing air cleaner side of the turbo as well. I had my intercooler cleaned about every 15000 miles. It helps to keep that air charge cooler and denser when the film is lacking.

Re:inside cab smells at idle?

Sorry but the odor is from the crankcase breather and every time you change oil it will be strong for a while.<br>Your local deal is stupid and full of s :P it

Re:inside cab smells at idle?

I got the same reason for the odor. Cosmoline from shipping to the assembly plant, but I could see it pool up on the block when it got hot, so I half-way believe them. No oil leaks they could find, and all is well at 5500 miles now.
