improving on stock Infinity stereo

the Infinity system is new to me, the 3 dash speakers sound about as good as factory speakers can, however the door speakers sound pretty bad. I plan on replacing the fronts, fading the rears out and adding subs and an amp.

1) will replacing the front door speakers cause any impedance problems? I'm not quite sure I understand how this stero works with its 7 speakers. thinking about Infinity Reference 6x9s or maybe 6.5s on a plate.

2) is there any better way than a line output convertor to get a signal for a sub amp?

thanks...

Unless you want to change the head unit, an LOC is probably going to be your best bet. I agree the front door speakers stink, but after researching a few posts here to figure out the wiring diagram and system setup, the head unit does not have an onboard amp, so the output from the deck is low level and is fed to a small amp behind the dash that breaks up the signals and amplifies it-so if you use an LOC make sure it is connected post amplification (by the wire loom going into the door.) The front door speakers are used for only the lower bass frequencies, which is what I tapped into to feed the high level input of my amp. I don't get any alternator noise and the bass sounds much better now-I actually have to turn it almost all the way down on the head unit to get a balanced tone.

if your goin as far as amps an speakers might as well go the $200 dollar next step. put in a head unit. rca's and full control of your sound. u probably won't be happy with it till you do.

i have the original OEM sirus radio head and am fine with it---the "Premium Infinity speakers" are a joke--replace them all and ad a 4 channel amp and you will be ready to go.

I did not go so far as to change the head unit on my truck because of the steering wheel controls-hovisimo might be in the same boat with a Laramie. I hear they make adaptors for them, but cost $, and once you upgrade the speakers and add an amp/some subs it sounds pretty decent.

the "infinity speakers" in dodges are not actually made by infinity but the system is designed by infinity. infinity does not make a speaker as crappy as the factory ones but i highly recommend going with the infinity kappa's as replacements and not the reference series- i've had both. if you go with an amp let me know- i have a brand new infinity 444 watt amp left over from my system overhaul since i decided to hold off on the subs.

I wasn't looking for the "upgraded" Infinity sound system but it was in the truck with all the other stuff that I wanted. It's decent but yes the door speakers suck. Does the stock head unit have enough power to power the Infinity Kappa series speakers?

Depends on what you want. the head will "work" but if you want clairity and crispness you need an amp

if you're going to try and improve over the factory system and want to be happy with the end result then the infinity kappa's and a good amp are a great way to go. if you try and get by without an amp you will probably regret it and end up adding an amp later so you might as well do it all at once and be done with it.

How do you add an amp to a 7 speaker system?

as have I, not impressed at all with Kappa 6.5 components. had to tear the door panels off at least every 6 months and replace either a tweeter or crossover on the old truck. literally 6 times. they sounded good but the quality was just not there.

IIRC Kappas are pretty power hungry, References aren't as bad. don't need anything super loud.

a little, like $100?

going with a Soundgate LOC, Reference 6x9s, pair of Perfect 10s and my M601 digital.

now that I think about it I actually had to put out about $100, already had everything else. $100 system FTW!
