I should shoot the dog ... but I won't

Over the weekend, I had the pickup parked with its front end within reach of where I tie out my 15 month old labrador retriever. Walking by the front of the truck Saturday, I realized that my heater cord no longer had a plug on the end, but the cord has some mighty suspicious tooth marks on it. After a stern disciplinary talk, I turned the truck around to keep the pup out of any further trouble. Next day I noticed some scrap wiring loom laying on the ground... ah, I thought, just trash from the snowplow finally melting out of the snow. The next day I saw a couple scraps of light gauge wire, which was sure curious. This morning, there lay a bulb in its socket. Says I: This ain't plow trash. A look up under the rear bumper, and low and behold he has chewed up the wiring harness to the trailer wiring connector and to one of the license plate lights! I called the friendly local robber, er, dealer, who wants $180 and change for two new wiring harnesses - one for the trailer connection, and a chassis wiring harness for the license plate light. Robbery, I say!
Does anyone know where I might be able to get replacement wiring harnesses for a more reasonable price? I hate to start rigging up my own on a still new pickup, but $180 is just plain unreasonable. I would sure appreciate any suggestions.

Ah the joys of a lab pup. I'm dealing with an 8 month old black lab right now... he's finally starting to get a little sense about him but still only minds when he wants to although that shock collar is mighty persuasive

Try a salvage yard if you have one nearby. If you still have the bulb holder with some wire still connected, you can repair it and put all your connections under shrink-tubing, etc to keep it waterproof. You'll never know the difference!

Old Alaskan..
If you look on the internet you can find some shrink tubing that has a glue in it that melts as it shrinks. This will seal any connection from almost anything (Labs not included). I have used it a great deal and would feel very comfortable making splices that are subject to the elements.

Like stated earlier, hit the salvage yards. You might want to contact member Justwannabeme about the pup. She's working with a lab pup right now and it sounds like she's doing well.

12 is awesome for a dane. I've had one make it to 13 and another to 10. Two is great because they wear each other out!!!

Sorry so Off Topic Guys -- We'll stop.

Ah yes the joy of a lab pup destroying everything! Try having 10 around at one time. I have a male and female adults that I have breed for field trialers. 10 pups are a handful but great to watch as their personalities develop.

Try a GSP, the energy level and enthusiasm of a GSP makes lab look like a lap dog (no disrespect to lab owners)

I have a lab too. By the looks of my house, you would think I owned a beaver.

I have 4 Chihuahuas, 4 Border Collies, 1 Jack Russell, and 1 Great Pyranees Guardian Dog, ALL of them have gone through spats of destructiveness. They should really be chewing on each other!!!! Bones only go so far, and ALL of them like to chew anything plastic. There is also NO age limitation to this game either. My youngest Chihuahua who is just at 3yo had not chewed anything and yesterday I found her chewing on the shop vac plastic stuff.

Oh well, all these levels of alarm systems ARE our best friends, an they all combines are easier on the nervous system and most of all the checkbook than raising one human child.

HEHEHEHE Brings back old memories of my lab. Was sittin in my lazy boy one august day about 12 years ago when I realized Iwas starting to sweat, dang ol lady must have turned off the ac. Nope its not off,let me check to see if it kicked a breaker, nope lets have a look at ol heat pump outside, to this day, I still cant figure how a dog can chew a 420 volt 3phase powerline completely into and not get lit up About a week later I went to hook up my gooseneck and discovered that the plug was chewed off of it too Young labs, you gotta love em

Don't shoot the dog!!! Who left it in RANGE of something important???
Just kidding.
My Lab chewed the mud flaps off of a van. Wife came in and said the flaps must of fell off. I went out to look and figured it out!
Her coat of hair was really shiney for a year! Black of course! Then the day she got her collar off and it disappeared. A week later I found it following very close behind her. Grabbed a pair of pliers and grabbed it , she walked away!
