in a test, the flow thru tail gates actually caused a drop in mpg's- don't know if it matters to you, but thought i'd mention it anyway.

I don't have a husky flow-thru tailgate, have another brand, but truthfully I saw no change in fuel economy when driving empty or towing.

I believe the testing that chipmonk is referring to was done with gas engine trucks, so possibly a diesel is less effected?? Many of these tests really do not maintain conditions properly across the board in their testing, they really become GIGO.

My tailgate has the dip/cutout for the 5th wheel, real nice to get in/out of the bed, low step-over instead of crawl over when the gate is up.

Most of the tests that came to that conclusion were short beds, or really short beds (i.e. Ford Explorer Sport-Trak). They were also tested at lower speeds, usually under 50 MPH. Real truck have long beds, and depending on how you drive it, you will see a very slight increase in mileage.

here are the SEMA results using an unspecified Dodge Ram pickup:

Condition Drag Coefficient Cd % Change From Baseline MPG
Baseline 0.432 N/A 16
Square Cap 0.480 11.11% 14.9
Cargo Net 0.461 6.71% 15.33
Removed Tailgate 0.447 3.47% 15.65
Lowered Tailgate 0.414 -4.17% 16.42
Tonneau Cover 0.381 -11.81% 17.18
New Cap Design 0.302 -30.09% 19

with the cargo net, mpg dropped from 16 to 15.33

I have a Husky V notched tailgate on my truck. I have had it for over three years and it still looks like new. There is a pic in my gallery of it on my truck. I have not seen any difference in mileage with the stock tailgate or the Husky of course I did not buy it for that reason.

I absolutely love my gate.

They also make a cap for it so it looks like a normal gate without the notch.
