How to remove stock muffler
How to remove stock muffler
Guys....Quick question. When my 51" Donaldson arrives along with the S-Pipe for the offset I am going to attempt the install myself. Does anyone have any tips on getting the stock system apart without cutting. I think I am going to put the muffler right behind the Cat and then the S-pipe between the muffler and tailpipe. Does that sound like the right thing to do.
Thanks again for any hints.

I just did mine with an MBRP and unless you have a torch to heat up the steel, I really dont see those pipes coming apart without cutting or heating. I ended up using a torch to cut mine off because it was crimped so tight from the clamps. In my honest opinion, I think you are better off just taking it to a muffler shop if you know someone that will do a good job and charge a reasonable price. If I had it to do over again, I would just take it to a muffler shop.
Johnnyh,
I noticed you have a crossroads 5th wheel. Did you have any problems with the bed sides hitting ? I have heard that the dodges sit up so high in the back that you need to remove the spacers on the rear springs. Just wondered how yours was working out ??

Thanks, Someone else recomended the same thing you did, bring it to a shop. I will probably do just that.
I have good clearance on my bed rails. My Cruiser sits pretty high as it is. I'll measure next time I hook up, but I think I have about 7" at the tailgate. My hitch is height adjustable also, but it is right in the middle.

I found an easy way back about 7years ago. I had a 1500 at the time. Just go to an area that has been recently logged. Then drive too fast and hit a stump just perfect. It will rip the entire exhaust off without damaging anything else (at least it did in mine)
now I did found this out by mistake and I am a profesional at tearing trucks up offroad so use caution....
on a serious note though I would take it to a GOOD muffler shop..I have done 2 of my own and helped with a couple more and we never end up with great results..

I used a cutting disc on a grinder. I had her apart in 5 minutes. Dont wory about saving the stock muffler, You wil only toss it out some time in the future. There is no one that is going to want that thing, and you will never put it back on.
Through it out now, so you dont have to hear the wife complain about it sitting behind the shed as an Eye Sore
, not that i know this from experience

I removed the clamps and then cut a couple longitudinal slits in the pipe being as careful as possible not to cut into the pipe below. Exhaust system slid apart real easy and was re-usable. It only had a couple thousand miles on it though.
tfarmer....yes, that is a cat. It doesn't have wires. In fact, I've never seen a cat with wires. Cars have O2 sensors near the cat which is maybe what you've seen?

JohnnyH,
We reccomend to our customers that get our MBRP performance replacement muffler to use a torch and heat it cherry red, they you need two people to act like they are rowing a boat with the tail pipe and intermediate pipe at the same time. That expands the joints and the factory muffler falls off. The insert the MBRP mufflers welded on hangers into the factory rubbers and use the supplied clamps to clamp it back down. Oh by the way wait for it to cool off first OUCHHHHHHHHHHHHH! and SIZZLEEEEEEE!
