Horifying Experience at the Dealership

I took the truck to the dealership to have the rear sliding window replaced due to it being defective. I dropped the truck off in the morning, went to work, and picked it up after work when it just happened to be dark outside. When I got it home, I decided to do a little investigating to see how well the window was installed. That is when things went down hill in a hurry. The company hired to do the install managed to cut the rubber stripping along the top of the back pannel, chew up the plastic colunm cover in the upper corner, put a nice gash in the head liner, and then on the outside they managed to get glue all over the paint around the window. :'( The next day I promptly called the dealer and informed them of the mess. I took it in after work for the service manager to look at it and he said they would take care of it. This is when the guy who wrote me up for the work told me "Oh-yeh, the tech told me he had caused a little damage, but it completely slipped my mind." I am sure he meant "Conveniently slipped his mind" > Hopefully they will get my truck back to the condition that it was originally in.

Better get used to it. It will only get worse.

Isn't that jumping to conclusions?? At least give the dealership an opportunity to make it right. If not, THEN jump all over them. Not everyone is perfect.

Yeah you can't exactly blame the dealership because a sub-contractor did a hack job install. If you can't get satisfaction from the dealership, the glass shop should have insurance to cover the damage in your rig.

Re:Horrifying Experience at the Dealership

And why do you suppose the dealer subs out the work? Either they don't have the qualified people to do the work or the warranty rate is so low that no techs will do it. Why do you think the job was so poorly done? Because the company that the job was subbed to does not get paid very well to do the job therefore hires people who are inexperienced. I posted a link here earlier about techs leaving the dealerships in droves because the manufacturers are cutting the warranty times. Guys can't make a living anymore so they move on. When the good guys are gone who do you think is going to work on your vehicles??

Man, I'm with Spots on this one. Guess you guys never had a hack job done on your car. I've seen that thread describing the exodus of mechanics due to cost cutting in warranty work.

They sub the work to the lowest price. If the sub hacks your car, both them and the dealer should be held accountable. Don't forget that the dealer is getting some renumeration in the process too.

Bottom line is to hold both their toes to the fire until your truck get fixed to your satisfaction. Let them work it out between themselves afterwards.

Yea, it's not like they botched a pump install or broke a headlight. When you have paint work that needs to be put right, odss are it will never be the same.

We have a body shop here that can match anything perfectly. BMW and Mercedes have all their new car repair work done there.

Hope there is one where you live.

I wouldn't call it jumping to conclusions. When a dealer tells you that he forgets to inform you that the sub messed up the interior of your truck, I would have to say that they need to be held accountable. Things like that need to be reported!!!

Re:Horifying Experience at the Dealership

I think that a dealership should inspect and pass every job they sub out BEFORE the customer ever sees it. That way, there wouldn't be any "the next morning I found......." However, we don't live in a perfect world. I'd give the dealership a chance to make it right. I had a situation where the dealership tore up one of my aluminum wheels while mounting some tires. They sent the wheel into the mfg. and had it resurfaced. When the wheel came in, they sent me with the repaired wheel to a private tire place to have the tire mounted on their "better" equipment. Only hassle was running on my spare with it's ugly steel wheel for a couple of weeks while the aluminum wheel was being repaired, and the two 60-mile round trips to the dealership to get the work done.

As an auto /truck mech. I have to tell you that spots statement about the good techs, leaving the dealer is right on .I left the dealer 5 years ago, as warranty pay had gotten to be way to low to live comfortably and the warrantys kept getting longer. The best thing you can do is find a good service advisor ,one that will make sure his best guy is on it,rather than the butcher of the shop . And if it makes you feel any better the dealer subletted the undercoating on my truck out , a short time later the spare tire fell out while going into hunting camp pulling my trailer in the snow!!! Now hows that for fun ???

Re:Horifying Experience at the Dealership

Auto dealerships aren't the only places where employees screw up. Had a bagger at the grocery store place a dozen eggs on the bottom of the sack. On top of the eggs he placed a half gallon of milk. You got it, fourteen miles on these mountain roads and I had egg scramble.

The store made it right. :'( You can get mad and blow a gasket or you can laugh at the guy's stupidity.
