Gonna need new tires soon and im leanin toward the BFG A/T's, im no tire genius by any means, in fact I know absolutely nothing about tires sizes and what not, i do know about Load ranges, but thats it. I want to go bigger than stock but I dont want something too big, want to stay in the 33" range. could I go with either one of these? Anyone have pics of either so I can get an idea of size??

I had some 305/70/17's, and they fit great. No rub what so ever. They had an aggressive tread, (Summit Mud Dawgs) so with an AT you will have plenty of room. Go with the 305's, you'll like them...

 

I had 285 on mine didnt even get threw winter. down to below half tread and i drive like a grandpa and i constantly check tire pressure and rotated tires all the time

they were great for off road but on road tires are soft compound and wear like crap

i got 10000 out of then and have a little more than 1/4" tread left

 

Have a neighbor with those BFG 285s on his Ford. He occasionally pulls a 30' 5th wheel camper (12K lbs) with his truck. He has not been happy with the wear, as of 10K miles they are more than half worn. Seems weight on those tires really do burn them down at an accelerated rate.

 

Madhat- I see you said you have 305/70's, I didnt see a 305/70 on BFGs site, could I still go with the 305/65's??

I'm going to be in the market for new tires soon, and will probably go with the Toyo Open Country A/T's in 285/70/17, load range E of course. I think a lot of folks here have gone with either these tires or the 285/75/17's (E as well) from Toyo, and it appears they're getting decent wear out of them.

 

I have 35 12.5 Toyo M/Ts in load range E. Have been happy with the wear, as of 5 k miles they aren't showing alot of wear....

yeah i am very disapointed in them also i switch and put back on my old set kumho and they are almost no tread but i got 60,000 out of them

i figured BFGs ATs would last at least 40000 but i am switching to cooper ST when after this winter

they didnt like the weight on my truck i just hauled firewood and gravel
and the side walls flexed like crazy they would roll into the turns and yes i had the proper rating for the the truck being so heavy


the tires are really up you i just didnt care for then and wont be buying them again

I have the 305 BFG A/T's and they suck. Wear out very fast. My next tire will be the Toyo's.

 

Where do you buy toyo's? I dont believe any dealer round here carry them...anywhere online??

 

I have BFG 285s and I tow heavy. Mine have over 43,000 miles on them right now and look great. I can probably go another 15-20,000 with them easy.

When I buy new tires im going to move up to 35'' BFG Mud Terrains, but I wholeheartily recommend the BFG ATs. I have no idea why 'CTD03' got such sorry mileage out of his. Member RowJ just went back to BFGs after running a set of Toyo ATs. He said he likes the BFGs much better, fwiw.

I have the BFG AT KO 315-70-17's on my Dodge truck, at 20K miles, the wear is minimal, they still look new. The secret to keeping these tires from excessive wear is making sure you are always on top of the air pressure AND rotate them about every 5K. I run them at 50 lbs, front and rear. I tow heavy loads with my SRW, run on a lot of dirt/gravel roads and highways, they see all kinds of conditions. Around the ranch they also see rocky off-road conditions. They are performing flawlessly.

The BFG MT's are too soft and DO wear out fast, especially on blacktop roads regardless of tire pressure. Some great clue here to their name, mud terrains, not all terrains. I had 1 set of the mud terrains and got about 25K out of them on one of my ranch trucks. The gravel roads, rocks, and local pitted blacktop roads ate them like they were the breakfast of champions.

I have a set of the TOYO AT's-load range E- on one of my ranch trucks, they ARE great for fuel mileage on the paved roads. They have gotten really pitted and chewed up running on gravel roads, and outright are terrible in snow or ice conditions. Might as well be running the stock tires that came with my new truck, just as bad a lifespan and wear.

I have a set of the BFG AT's on my other (Ford) ranch truck, right at 40K miles of use and have right at/about 1/2 tread remaining. They are wearing like iron, I expect they will go to about 60K like the last set I had on this truck. Again, you must stay on top of the air pressure and rotate them to get good life out of them.

All 3 of my trucks are 4x4's, so they get used similarly. I also have the BFG AT KO's on my Jeep Wrangler, they are wearing great too.

Texas, are those E-Rated?? Maybe that could be why they are holding up so good against some others...

 

I have a set of each sizes, the BFG AT 285-70/17 and a set of 305-65/17 PC XAT's (both sets on factory wheels),...The BFG's are a little taller and skinnier, and I bought the 305 as they are E rated which I use for towing when needed, also the speedo is bang on with the 305's.

PC XAT's only 15,000km of hiway towing and very little gravel use, haven't measured tred.
