Head light upgrades?

I have seen alot of talk about head light upgrades and this brings forth some questions for me. I had a 2002 1500 and replaced the head light and fog lamp bulbs with high intensitys. I started getting a lamp out light on and off. Then the driver side would cut out at times or not come on. I took it in with only 30k on it and the head light plugs and wires had started melting. I was told by the service tech it was a common problem for after market upgrades and that some burn so bad it takes the box with it. He claimed it has due to the wire not being rated for the higher amp draw. I had to have new pig tails with plugs installed at my expense.

Has this issue been adressed? I know own an 06 and would like to upgrade my head lights but do not want to run in to this issue again.
