G56 Shift Help

I have a new 07 QC 3500 dually 4x4 with the G56 and I love it. However, I have had a shoulder replacement and it is very difficult for me to push it into 5th & 6th. When going into 5 & 6 you have to push hard away from you to access the gears. I assume that this is because of a spring somewhere. Is there any way to reduce the pressure needed, or eliminate that pressure in going to 5&6. Like the old four speeds (my 64 el camino, different linkage) there isn't any additional pressure (or very little to go into 3 & 4). Can anyone give me some advice (no, I don't want an automatic). Thanks...this is my first post, so be gentle with me.

First of all WELCOME.

Second. My G56 was a bit hard to shift into 5th and 6th at first but has gotten better. I have just turned 17k miles and goes much smoother.

I agree with rock crawler. Mine was the same way when I first got it...im at about at 17K as well and she's starting to loosen up a litle.

I heard that someone put some amsoil sythetic fluid in the T-case and it helped alot.

Thanks. I wondered if there was a way to soften that spring or remove it. I think I'll replace the fluid with synthetic as suggested.

Wink

Just make sure that you are around 2200rpm and it will fall into gear allot easier. Oh and 6th in my G56 is down and to the right so I'm pulling not pushing!! - - - - - - - - But I know where you are coming from!!! I think that you mean while putting it into 3rd and 5th right!!! !

Maybe something isn't quite right?? I've always thought mine just goes into 5th and 6th very smooth and easy....although reverse requires a little muscle.

The short shifter is for the V5600 not the G56. That might be a solution when they make one for the G56.

It is the action of pushing to the right, away from body that is causing me some trouble. (my bionic arm is not very strong in that direction) Shifting up and down is not the problem, it is holding it against that resistance to access the 5/6 slot causes me a little difficulty (pain).

As the truck breaks in and my arm gets stronger, it may all be good. I just came up with the idea of keeping pressure on that spring, when I am not driving, to try and weaken it a little. I used a bungee cord to the passenger door and the gear shift to keep the spring compressed when it is parked to wear it down a little. Since you all indicate it gets softer with time/use, this might cause it tosoften a little.

Thanks for the input. I will go to synthetic fluid after I get some more miles on it. Only 700 so far.

I'm with you. 5th and 6th go in easily but you are pushing away. Reverse does require quite a pull to the left. I'm hoping with more miles the tranny loosens up.

I wouldn't say it causes me pain, but 6th gear, especially, on mine is not the easiest angle. I can definitely see how it could cause someone problems.

And like everyone else seemed to mirror, we'll not get into the fun that is reverse gear! It took me a whole day after getting the truck to finally be able to get that thing it. Kept thinking I was gonna break it!

Just cram and slam- - - - - -that is the way I do it! I have never really has a problem with getting mine into reverse. I have had a little problem with getting it to go into 2nd while downshifting but that is probably because I was trying a little to soon! JB

All gears on mine a tight - especially reverse. But, then again I only have 876 km on it since i picked it up Dec. 27th.

I need to find a way to get more time off to drive it.

In reverse...

In 6th...

Like a few of the guys said...I think it should loosen up as it breaks in. I'm creepin' on 30k at this juncture and the thing shifts like butter these days. It was tight at first, but man, I love the feel of the tranny nowadays. For sixth, I put my palm on the shifter so it's facing the passenger door. Then I kinda let my tricep and forearm do the work. I'm thinkin' this might relieve the pressure on yer shoulder. If yer knuckles are facing the passenger door going into sixth, I think this will put some pressure on yer shoulder as you pull it right and down. Doing the palm out method almost seems effort-less now but maybe I'm just used to it. Either way, it's a thought.
