Funky(to me)voltage

Ok, so driving across Hwy 40 in Illinois this evening(nice smooth road), and I get a ding from the dash. Volt meter is showing 8 volts... Pull over and get the multi-meter out, 12.8 volts on both batteries, 12.8 volts on the alternator lug, 0 volts between the alt. case and neg. post, most fuses in the box show 12.8 volts except foe I think 2 that show just over 8v. Talked with a tech friend who said to see what the command voltage was from the PCM, my scanner don't have that option. Now, get the truck home and shut it off for about a minute, starts right up and shows about 13v on the dash. As soon as I turned on the lights, right back down to 8v. Hooked the scanner up, no codes, shows ECM voltage at 13v.

Anyone have any ideas???

That was with the truck running. At the time I did my road side check, I was still a ways from home, on flat ground and not sure she would restart and by the time I made it to the house the sky decided it need to dump on me, so I havnt been able to check anything other than for codes and make a few calls. I do warranty inspection work and always have my computer in the pick-up but I've never run into this issue before.THis is my second 2005 and evrything I've had before would give me some notice that the alt. was going out, never had 1 just go out like this driving down the road. During my little road side check, the only physical defect I could see was the rear mount lug on the top(as you look at it from the front) was broken from the alt.case. I have to go help the wife out today with a shoot over in Indy so I'll do some more digging when I get back home this afternoon, hope it warms up some, 70 yesterday, 29 now...

Replaced the alternator today after having it tested, didn't see the test results, only that it failed. Old one had a broken mount tab on it anyway so now its back up to reading 15ish volts on the gauge.
