one can always try... I'm slightly negative about dealerships anymore. It seems as though every time I attempted to use them, I ended up frustrated and re-doing the work myself.

That's all I'm saying PoorMansCat, he might as well try, there's not really much likelyhood that they can mess up a u-joint replacement if he can get them to do it on Dodge's dime.

I'm not really crazy about my local dealers shops, there are three within 30 miles and I've had sketchy treatment by all of them but if you can go in there and schmooze them for a few minutes and get what you want, well......why not? Turn the tables on them.

Good point... Although, at this point, if the u joints are the problem, and they didn't even bother to investigate those when the truck was in the shop, should I really trust that dealer to do the repairs? I don't know.. It may just be that one service advisor that left a bad taste in my mouth, but I really have no desire to step foot back in that place.

Is there a good driveline shop that is local to where you live? Either a shop that specializes in automotive performance, or a shop that works on driveshafts for big rigs. I'd take it somewhere to get a 2nd opinion.

But I would agree with most people above, It's most likely a u-joint issue. Get the rest of the joints replaced - or at least do a full inspection on the joints. To me, the only way to really inspect a u-joint is to remove it from the drive shaft, and then remove each u-joint cap individually & look at the bearings, make sure there's enough grease, etc.

I think someone suggested that it might be an issue with the slip yoke - I'd appreciate if someone could explain that to me? How would that cause a vibration? Unless there's an issue with the bearing for the output shaft from the transfer case.

Aside from the drive shaft components, I think most other possible causes can be ruled out, based on the fact that the vibration only occurs under acceleration/deceleration (things that apply a torque to the drive shaft).

Replace all the u-joints, dynamically rebalance the driveshaft. Find a shop where they know what they are doing (ask around). May not be "the" fix, but it will eliminate the other big problem (besides carrier bearing). See links in above.

Good luck.

Somehow, the vibration has just about dissapeared... Very strange, but I am not complaining. I plan on taking the truck to a local driveline shop and having all the u joints replaced as well as a balance. I was looking at my warranty paperwork, and it does say that U joints SHOULD be covered.. which I found odd, since they are technically a wear item..

I still hanging onto my bet that it is a u-joint, they probably checked them for play like you did. A dry cap will be tight until the bearings start to disintegrate..

This is what I would do. Jack up each tire and inspect. With back tires off the ground inspect the rear DS, look for rust. Do the same for the front. Inspect the front knuckle U joints. If a u joint has gone bad on a DS, replace all joints on that DS. It seems that a dealer spends as much time as he can looking for ways to not cover a repair under warranty. I should have videoed the sales pitch I got for the extended warranty.

You can request a Chrysler service rep to look at your truck. Don't give up yet the squeeky wheel gets the grease. Chrysler should be putting a new driveshaft in if that's the problem with your truck. Request a meeting with the Chrysler rep he has the last say not the Dealership.

Just an update... I took the truck to a DIFFERENT dealer... Told them of the situation at the first dealer, and the service person laughed LOL... Got a call from them today, they are replacing ALL the U joints in the rear driveshaft as well as the carrier bearing under warranty... I will keep you posted if this was the problem, but something tells me, the vibes will be gone.

DJ I hope they do get it fixed but if by chance they don't, I found this searching for a one piece. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/3r...installed.html
