Foam!
Foam!
I aked recently if others had inaccurate fuel gauges. I thought mine was off. Well, yesterday, I discovered it is worse than I thought.
The foaming never bothered me when filling up because I just assumed it was a minor thing. I would pump till it shut off, then round out to the next dollar. Yesterday I thought I would pump till I could see diesel in the filler neck so I could get an accurate mpg figure. I was showing that I had just over 3/4 tank of fuel at the time.
The pump kicked off a little over 10 gallons. I pumped on to about 11 gallons which is where I would normally stop. Then I pumped some more. Stop. Pump. Stop. Pump. The guy in the Texaco said he thought I must be pumping in over 100 gallons since I was there so long. I ended up putting 16.38 gallons in the truck before liquid fuel was visible in the filler neck!
I did not realize how much the foaming was affecting my fill ups--around 5 gallons extra. I had never had a full tank of fuel until yesterday.

If you put your finger over the anti spill hole in the nozzle I have been told this helps stops fuel foaming. Also, this is another good reason for keeping your fuel tank at least 1/2 full. Those little bubbles and cause heck with your LP, IP, and injectors.
Lee....One thing you may consider is a Fuel tank vent modification that a TDR and DTR member put together. It greatly reduces the time it takes you to do what you did. It replaces the stock vent with a new one higher in the tank. Works very well. Let me know if you are interested and I will try and get you a link.

I put the Fuel tank vent modification on my 04.5 and it works great. It would take me about 15 to 20 min. to fill up completly before, now it only takes about 5 min. It is probaly the best $35 that I spent on my truck.

I really need to get off my duff and buy that kit. It is hard enough to find diesel around here, and then to spend 15-20 minutes filling up while some rich-Edit is waiting to fill up her Mercedes is getting old
