Fan clutch went out
Fan clutch went out
I was checking the truck out before vacation , and noticed the wires going to the fan clutch were severed. Pulled the camper about 100 miles and never got over 210 degrees. I had it replaced at Henderson Dodge(good job) in Aransas Pass. The a/c didn't work well either with fan clutch bad . We drove with the windows down. The wife daughter and niece were not real happy.
The clutch locked up or something to pull the wires apart. I didn't hear a thing.
Anyone else ever have a clutch go out so early? (20k miles)

I had the wires cut by the fan to, dealer fixed no charge. When they replaced the fan clutch I asked what they well do with the old one, they said nothen, Asked if i could have it, they said yes.(I allwas ask for the old parts, sometimes I get them sometimes I dont) But you can buy a new wire harness for them. But It was a could thing I got the old one back. Just off warrenty it happened again, Old one on their now and works good. This time I wire-tied the wires to the rad. hope that stops the wires from loosening off and getting cut by the fan.

I get confused. I was trying to find prior posts on the fan so I wouldnt have to ask this: Wires going to the fan clutch? I just dont see them. Did they make some trucks with a regular mechanical fan clutch? Sorry to ask a question that has probably been asked many times before.

Went thru some high water and pushed the wire right into the fan. Had the wires spliced back together and all is well. I don tknow what year they started this maybe 04.5, but you cant see the wires unless you crawl under the truck and look up from the bottom. They go thru a harness and up betwen the fan and the radiator. I zip tied mine to the radiator.

Same thing has happened to me twice now. Called the dealer and they said the part is $386.00. The last time was at 55,000 now i am at 76,000 sure sucks. They say they have not heard of this on any thing other than four wheel drive vehicles going through the brush and jerking them into the fan...
This has me confused, I have never heard of wires going to a clutch fan, how does it work? The operation of the ones I know about use an oil that expands inside a diaphram at a certain temperature that expands and tightens around the clutch post and causes it to spin faster

The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the level of engagement of the electronically controlled viscous fan clutch by monitoring coolant temperature, intake manifold temperature, air conditioning pressure and transmission oil temperature. Based on cooling requirements, the ECM sends a signal to the viscous fan clutch to increase or decrease the fan speed.
Fan speed is monitored by the ECM. Fan speeds above or below a calibrated threshold will set a DTC. Circuit concerns will also set fan clutch DTC's.
DIESEL ENGINE
The electronically controlled viscous fan drive is attached to the fan drive pulley mounted to the engine. The coupling allows the fan to be driven in a normal manner. The fan speed is controlled by the electronic control module.
They don't say it in so many words, but I think they put electricity through the fluid to heat it up. Still works the same I think other than taking electricity to heat up the fluid instead of engine heat and they monitor the speed via a sensor inside the fan as well.

vzdude is right (again). I would have bet money that my fan didn’t have any wires going to it. After his last post I looked again. Sure is hard to spot but there it is going from the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side up and connecting to the front of the fan.
