It's my take that it can be done w/o swapping axels.

In order to make the swap to and from a DRW the axle needs to be swapped. I did this a few years ago and swapping the axle is easy, there is no need to even swap the rotors. We disconnected the brake lines and calipers as an assembly so we didn't even need to bleed the brakes. Roll one axle out and role the other in. The hardest part was removing the hub centric rear wheels and wiring the fender lights. Otherwise it was plug and play!

If you want to make a run to Texas, I'm in. Even our trucks are the same color My tires and rims are chrome 2010 laramie rimes with new 285/70R17 Nitto Terra Grapplers.

Lincoln, NE, or about 1,600-miles from either end.

A guy could make a round trip from Portland, ME to Portland, OR and head back via Portland, TX across the bay from us here, and thence through Portland, TN on the way back.

About 7,500-miles.

Even at my 16-cpm we'd be looking at $1,200 in fuel.
