drilling into the dash, sort of...?
I did not get the sirus radio with my truck. I already had a reciever in my old truck so I just carried it over. There is a great little cubby under the factory stereo that my reciever fits into perfectly. Problem is, I don't want my antenna and power wire strung out across my dash. If I drill a 1/2 hole in the back of that cubby, will I hit anything? I want to run my wires out the back, to their proper locations. I don't have a service manual so I have no clue. Also, will the hole void my warrenty?
Thanks!
Thanks!
If you can, pull it, or pull the plastic piece on the side to check, make sure there isnt a metal brace behind it or anything, but just drill a small pilot hole to start, and work your way up, as long as you arent stabbing all the way thru with the bit, and just enough to make the hole all the way thru you should be just fine...
You should be able to put your hand up there and 'feel' for anything behind it. If you cannot see up there get an inspection mirror and take a look. You could also drill a hole to the side instead of the back if you have no clearance, have you considered how that might work out? I have not stuck my head in to look behind the cubby. I mounted my trailer brake control under the cubby, there was an inch or so clearance back there in that area. I removed and cut the lower panel so that the rear plug/wiring could go through that area, it allowed a little more recess of the trailer brake control.

Yeah, it's pretty tight behind there. I would definitely pull it off first if you're going to drill it. It only takes about 4-6 screws to remove the whole thing.
If you screwed up the drilling or didn't want the hole there any more, you can just buy a new cubby part from Dodge for (probably) nothing. They attach from the rear of the panel with 2-4 screws. I had to move all my cubby holes and AC/4x4 controls over to the new dash bezel when I installed my stereo. It's a piece of cake.

i put my brake controller there. i drilled on the left side. i just drilled real slow and i didn't hit anything you will be ok. it was very very hard to run the plug to the back of that cubby hole i ended up rapping the end of the controller plug/wires with elec tape then i was able to grabb onto a peace of the tape with needle noise plyers.
check this out

you can run the wires behind the dash through the existing hole over to the power plug for the brake controller. I put a cig lighter type plug on the ebrake mounting plate and spliced into the brake controller power wire.

the antenna wire goes up under the inner door trim and under the weatherstrip.

Thanks for the pics. I mounted my brake controller where your reciever is. The cubby I'm talking about is the slot right under the stereo. It doesn't look removable. At least not easily. I can't think of another way to do it.
