Tell the dealer your bottom line includes the doc fees, or walk away. I have never paid doc fees on any car I have bought. $499 is outrageous.

Tell him you'll fill out the paperwork and expect $499 taken off your negotiated price.

In my neck of the woods they try the doc. fee, and I just laugh at them. Tell them that you will fill out any forms they need. Another one they try is ADP of about $600-750 so I refuse that as well. ADP stands for additional dealer profit! Ha Ha.
They said that the CTD's are harder to get. My dealer does not have a gasser on the lot. I laugh at that too.

Tell them what you will do and be ready to walk away if your needs are not met.

When I bought my frontier, we were looking for an Xterra for my wife. She had just come from a dodge dealer that had blew her off and got her in a bad mood. As soon as the sales man walked up to her, she jumped his case about how she expected to be treated. We ended up not finding an Xterra she liked, but found my truck instead. Left twice but finally got the deal I wanted.
