Do dealerships have access to maintenance records?
Is there a way for the dealer to look up service records by the vehicles VIN? We just bought our 06 w/ 26k on the clock, so it would be nice to see if any prior work has been done.
I asked my service guy this question and he said no, which I thought was BS. It would only make sense to have this info nationally available between dealerships. So I was just curious if the guy was blowing smoke up my ... or not?
Thanks

If the dealer does any work its on the work history of the vehicle . My last Jeep I broke down 500 miles from home the dealer had everything ever done from oil changes (lifetime free)to the recalled ball joints by my local dealer. Even the work order for them to replace the oil pan after they stripped the threads on the drain plug- no chage to me .I would think its the same for Dodge
When I bought my '93 the guy said it was serviced at a local Dodge dealer. I asked the dealership where he had it serviced and they were able to tell me everything that had been done, including oil changes and other basic maintenance.
That is all true, but Daimler Chrysler is concerned as far as records that are available to any dealer, they only keep track of warranty and recall repairs. Each dealer usually has the records of what that dealer does to a vehicle. It is a totally seperate system.
I agree ^ w/vzdude
Yeah, that makes sense.

Dealerships can use different computer programs to operate their business. These programs do not usually tie into one another. As it has been stated warranty and or recall repairs can be accessed from another dealership because the warranty repair paper trail was sent to D.C. headquarters for payment. When a dealer accesses warranty information they are contacting D.C.'s database via a direct link or internet. Also due to new privacy laws (at least in California) Anybody at a dealership that gives out vehicle history or repair information without making sure they are talking to the owner of the vehicle can get in big trouble. Ya ya the privacy police will come and get you.
