Re:Daytime Running Lights

2 more cents...

Any feature that makes me more visible to some of the stupider/incompetent drivers out there...I'm for. I ride bikes and was glad I had a running light. Point taken about bikes blending in again (but also that DRL's were not expressly for motorcycles), but that's why I now ride with my high-beam on during the day. I get light flicks from some cars, but hey...that means they've seen me, and my neighbour in the provincial police says he like's seeing folks from further way too (plus he has that nifty "headlight defeat" button on the FedSig light bar, when he wants to hide )

Some folks really get torqued on this issue...I do find it a bit strange. I like the safety/visibility aspect. When I fly (helo's and fixed wing) I don't turn off my anti-collider light to "save the strobe". I need it...I've have many near misses with "flying farmers" who'll flick an ultralight up in the middle of an airway and not even see you until you turn and they see your anti-coll.

I don't consider DRL's as a function of Canada's relatively socialistic government(s) eating away at my rights...I think it's a good counter to some drivers out there that appear to not look any further that 30 or 40 feet ahead of them. Those types **** me off to no end! >

I also don't personally buy the "don't want it 'cuz it wastes more gas because of the load on the alternator" argument...guys will waste more gas during one jackrabbit start at a green light than a year of DRL's will eat. Sure bulbs will go sooner, but I keep a spare headlight, stop light and turn signal bulb in all my vehicles (bike included) in each vehicle's "survival/safety" kit I made, anyway. Maybe I paid attention during Scouts' "be prepared" lessons.

Last time I drove my Charger through the States, everyone kept flicking their lights or driving up beside me to tell me my lights were on...I couldn't figure it out? Stopped at a Flying J outside of Ann Arbour to fuel and asked a Michigan State Trooper stopped there if I was doing something wrong or breaking a law. He said, "Nope son, in fact I wish more people drove with lights on, especially near dusk...I've come real close to getting hit at times I went to pull out of 'the mall' and didn't see 'em."

I'll keep 'em on, including turning on my headlights for my cars that don't have DRLs. I'd rather pay for a few bulbs over the life of my vehicle and feel a bit safer.

FWIW...

Cheers,
DT

Re:Daytime Running Lights

The DRL are dimmer (ie. lower voltage) than when the switch is turned on to preserve bulb life. They are also directed the same angle as high beam. Now Banana, aren't you sorry you asked? ;D ;D

Casey

Re:Daytime Running Lights

My 03 Dodge has day time running lights and my Goldwing has as well The Dodge is at half voltage and has two lights far apart and the Goldwing has one light at full voltage and if someone can't tell the difference I don't want to be on the road he is driving on.
Jim O

However, it was my understanding that "daytime running lights" were actually much dimmer than the normal headlights, so just turning on the switch doesn't cut it! And, I suggest that those of you who run the risk of burning out your headlight 100 miles from nowhere, because of some government mandate, take charge of your own destiny and either disable the day time headlight feature or carry an extra bulb.

You're correct, on 4 wheeled vehicles at least, the high beam filament is burned at around 9 volts. At this voltage, the filament should last just short forever, but I don't have failure data so I can't swear to it. : Bluedresser, if I had only one headlight, I'd make absolutely sure I had a spare. Unfortunately, this thread has seems to have into turned into a personal rights issue. Yes, running headlights or fog lights will provide DRL's, but you're burning tail lights and primary beams at full voltage, and that will consume their life expentancy more quickly. You're also consuming more energy running them at full voltage. DRL's would also raise the CAFE on the Daimler-Chrysler fleet which is probably the primary reason DC and Ford don't employ them. Personally, I have them on my GM Impala and appreciate their presence.....along with my seatbelt and airbag.

Re:Daytime Running Lights

I have them on my truck and like them. But, I have just gotten into the habit of turning my lights on. Usually the minute the truck flashes up, I flip the lights on. It just becomes habit!!
I don't think you could install them on a U.S. truck because of the related wiring, module and whatever else is necessary. We all know how DC skimps on the hood insulation, vanity mirrors, etc stuff so I can't imagine them spending that few extra bucks to have U.S. trucks wired when it's not needed. At the same time how many millions did it cost to re-engineer the wiring harnesses to have one truck with and one without DRL's.
Just my thoughts

Re:Daytime Running Lights

All it takes is a simple DRL running kit from JC witney any one with common wiring skills can install one. This will allow you the option to turn them off and on and only light the headlights and not the cab and parking lamps. You would end up paying more at the dealer. In essence all the unit is basically is a relay with a reisistor to lower the voltage to the lights. You can also make one your self. I put them on all the crown vics I install police equipment for one paticular city. The whole install takes about 15 minutes.

Re:Daytime Running Lights

??? I know on my 96 that the wire harness had plugs to add remote pwr. locks. You should look at a service manual for the info and see if you can add factory parts and leave out the cluster lamp. JM2C :P

Taking delivery somewhereelse seems to work for those in California wanting the new HOs.

My insurance agent told me -- 10% discount on the collision premium to have DRL's on the truck. Just turning the lights on won't qualify. I forgot to ask if aftermarket DRL boxes qualify for the discount.

Cheez! Daytime running lights is turned on with a DRB.Change language to another country/Canada.its no biggy.Did tons at the D.C. I use to work at.Dosent change any thing else.Same truck her/Canada/Mexico.There was a issue about daytime running lights NOT cutting back on accidents in studies done several years ago and maybe helping create more accidents.Like waving a towel at a bull.Thats the reason its not used much in the U.S.But all D.C.autos for past seyears DO have daytime running lights its just not TURNED ON.

You have a link to the study? All of them that I have read from Europe to Canada have all said that there was a reduction in crashes due to DTRL. This is the first I have heard of one the other way. Thanks

The study I read was a few years back when I wanted to know why the U.S. didn't turn them on.If I remember correctly they actually sighted WHERE they are used NO reduction in daytime accidents whats so ever.Thats why ITS not mandated to be used over here.In fact(I may stand corrected)I think they showed a INCREASE in accidents.I know that only on dim/rainy days do I ever notice there worthwild if FOLKS would use them.it seems ALL chevy trucks only got one working anyway.Lots of motorcycles that I see seem to have a CANDLEPOWER thats almost blinding also even in BRIGHT light. But there very simple to turn on in a D.C.auto.Does not affect anything else and yes they are dim etc.
