Custom Mega Cab Longbed ?

Please forgive my ignorance, but I just have to ask. Has anyone seen or heard of someone cutting a new Mega in half, extending the frame rails, and installing a regular 8' bed/fenderwells? At first blush, it doesn't look like it would be that bad, but I'm not sure as I could only find a 2500 to look at. Are the 2500 and 3500 frames the same? It appears as though there's a "step" in the frame just after the cab - that could be a problem, but everything else appears to be pretty straight forward - lengthen driveshaft, brake lines, fuel lines, etc., etc.

I know it would be pretty long, but I don't think it would be much longer than a full size Ford. I'm getting the itch to upgrade from my 98 12V dually so I can have a full size cab, but I just don't want to switch to Ford or Chevy to get it. I pull a 40' GN racecar trailer, so the shortbed is pretty much out of the question. Anybody out there have similar thoughts or advice? Thanks ahead of time for all responses!

Didn't Kelderman do that to their show truck? It was a long box, but they added like 12" to the cab to make essentaily a mega cab. I'll have to go at some old magazines.

Yes, Kelderman did it, but they took the extra space for the cab out of the bed.

Syndicate, Pete, thank you both very much. A factory look is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. For the most part, I like the modifications I do to my stuff to be very subtle - that way the only folks that notice are the ones that have the knowledge to appreciate the effort.

Any information you can find - contact or otherwise is most appreciated.

I don't think it would be too hard to find either a good used box or a "take off" from one of the custom upfitters. Does anyone have any contacts?

Has anyone heard of any difficulty welding on these late model frames? I'm not sure where, but I remember seeing a post somewhere saying that the frame material and forming process made it difficult to weld - does this ring a bell to anyone?

Does anyone have any suggestions for additional research? Again, thanks to all for the help!
