ok, I was wondering about this. How much do you think that garbage truck weighs? they say the truck can safely tow what, 16000 pounds? or is that wrong? anyway, I was behind a semi (unloaded) and it lost traction and was holding up traffic (very slight grade for me, but just icy enough for him) and I was trying to figure out if I would actually be able to offer any help, but I thought better of it, cause it was most likely over 20,000. would I have actually been able to pull something like that? or is a garbage truck the limit

That truck prob weighed 30k lbs. Our trucks can only SAFELY tow 16k. You can pull more alright but can you keep it inline and stop it.

thats awesome. so for extremely short tugs, where there is a driver inside the other vehicle to hit the brakes (like in the above instance), how much would someone estimate the max be for these rigs?

I'd say traction decides. If you hook to something and your wheels spin and it don't move, its too big. I put it low range and let the big dog eat!

Dodge ran an ad a few years ago of a dually towing a 200(?) ton quarry dump truck on a dirt/gravel road...Can't find the pic, but it exists in these forums somewhere.

It is in the general diesel forum. I believe it is titled "Dodge pulling 155,000 lbs."

For tuging stuck/inanimate objects there is no real weight limit. As said above traction is the limitng factor. If ya can make it move go for it.
