Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

When I was at the dealer for an oil change, I asked the dealer about this issue and was told "it's normal on the Ram with the Cummins." So far from the posts, it seems to be normal. Since normal doesn't mean that it should be happening, I wish they would fix this issue.

10,000 miles on my 03, and no exhaust fume problems. Just lucky I guess.

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

Why has nobody been to a dealer about this?
I have not had time myself.

This isn't normal

I remember Chevy Corvairs (rear engine) they took them off the market....they too had a exhaust leak or fumes to the passenger compartment

Diesel or gas NO fumes should migrate into the passenger area. So don't think we are big diesel truckers and not do anything about it......I am contacting Dodge Chrysler.

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

Mine was awful when I got it. I had read about it and did not have time to extend the tube. Wife and I went on a 2000 mile trip 3 days after I picked it up. When ever we'd stop I turned the air off or put it on recirculate. Then when we got back I put the extra tube on. Disappointed could still smell it, maybe not as bad. I have changed oil once, not sure it got worse but now I seldom if ever smell it 13000 miles.

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

This is Dodge reply to fumes in th cab.

Dear Hairy,

Thank you for your recent email to DaimlerChrysler Motors regarding your
2003 Dodge Ram 2500.

Unfortunately, we are unable to diagnose the situation you have outlined
in your email. There are too many variables involved and a detailed
inspection of your vehicle will be required for proper diagnosis. We
recommend that you contact your authorized DaimlerChrysler dealership
for an appointment for proper diagnosis and repair.

DaimlerChrysler dealerships have the factory training, equipment and
information available to them to diagnose and correct problems with
DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation vehicles. We are confident that this
concern is not beyond their capabilities. Should your dealer require
factory assistance, it is available through our zone office.

Seek out the DaimlerChrysler dealerships that are known for excellence
in customer service - our Five Star dealers. Visit http://www.fivestar.com,
or call 1-800-677-5STAR.

If a Five Star Dealer is not convenient, you can find a dealership
locator in the "Find/Locate a Dealer" area in the Chrysler
(http://www.chrysler.com), Jeep® (http://www.jeep.com) or Dodge
(http://www.dodge.com) web sites.

Thank you again for your email.

And there you go....Nothing?

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

My 01 does it. There is a TSB on an odor shortly after performing a service due to oil type/additives and the open crankcase system on the Cummins. Normal.

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

Its not normal to get burning eyes and fumes so bad you gotta get out of the truck. Several of my passengers comment on the diesel smell as the first thing they notice.

I had an 01', nothing came close to this.
I will look into sealing off the cowl flaps when I can find some time. If that does not fix it...the dealer will get the call.
Dealers seldom resolve issues like this without a lot of pressure to dig deeper.

Re:Crankcase vapour/exhaust Fume fix!!!

It may be normal for the Cummins engine but it is not normal for the smell to migrate into the passenger compartment.

I live in the Mountains.....no really big dealer here to ask about this........why don't you guys around the BIG dealers go and ask about this.....I am sure you won't be the first...AND....they MAY have an answer!

Yes I did report to the dearler about the smells coming in to the cab. They checked it out said everything was to factory setting. Told me to turn off the outside air at idle. This is a new 04 with 1060 miles.
I hope the above fix works.

My dealer said- " hmm, I'll contact Dodge and look into it." I have friends and a brother who have had the Cummins since the early ninties. '92, '97, '02, '03. The first thing I noticed was that the oldre Dodges were really loud, and really stinky. They managed to get rid of the loud, but they still stink like#$@$^it. My brother always said that they smelled because cummins had a way of burning the diesel more completely and efficiently.(Laugh if you wish, but compare the mileage and power!) We have gone over this a lot, and I know that if the exhaust is blowing under or toward the cab when you are sitting still, you will smell it, unless you use the recycle mode on your defroster/ fan. I think those holes in the cowling are there for a reason(Drains?), just like I'm not going to drill holes in my air intake box, I'm not going to plug those holes up.
