cooper tires

Hey all, I just put 285/70-17 cooper discoverer stt's on my 05 2500 and was kind of shocked. they have quite a lot of road noise and they are pretty noisy in town also. I am running 50 psi in them. I don't think I want to live with it so my tire guy says I can trade them in for another cooper tire at no cost. I am looking at either the ATR or the ST. I don't do a lot of off roading and I pull a 9000lb fiver in the summer. I was wondering if the st's are noisy. I still want a tire that looks tough but I want it to be pretty quiet on the road. (BFG AT quiet) I just got caught up in the stt looks,(they look awesome) but not practical for what I do. What do you think?

see if cooper makes a tire called the toyo m/t. but seriously there are numerous threads about people experiencing some issue or another with coopers (bad wear, bad handling, etc.). would they possibly let you go to a different brand? toyo m/t's are definitely highway friendly and wear very good for a mud tire.

I run the Cooper ATR 315/70/17's on my truck. I tow a 28' Travel Trailer that weighs about 9,000lbs loaded. I have had no issues with these tires in over 20K miles. They are not an agressive tire by any means, but they wear well, are quiet, and handle nicely. I have used them offroad and they work ok, except in serious mud. You are not going to find an agressive tire that is as quiet as a non agressive tire. Those big tire lugs that look cool and chew through the mud are going to make noise. It's all a matter of how much noise is acceptable to you.

Also the more aggressive the tread, the greater the heat buildup and lower fuel economy due to parasitic drag. I run ATR 275-70R18s and they're great on snow and rain. I have over 30K on them without issue.

Actually, those (i have the stt's too, same size) are the quietest of the mud terrain tires out there. Air them up to 65 and try it. They do growl, but that's the nature of the beast, not the brand.

I have the STTs on my Ford and the Toyo MTs on my Dodge. The STTs are louder than the MTs, no question about it...

I have STT 325-65-18 with 3000 miles on them. 800 miles towing a 9.5K toyhauler.

They aren't noise to me and so far are wearing very well. I run them at 40-45 up front and 32-35 in the rear.

Maybe I'm just used to MT tires but I think there not loud at all. I can hear other comp. MT tires on trucks as they drive past me over my own tires....

Wow! I just got some yesterday (Thanks Bikepatrol! I traded my OEM 265's for the Coopers. Both sets had similar mileage-5k) and thought they were pretty quiet for a mud-terrain. The only mud tires I've had that were more quiet were the Toyo MT's. After about 10k, the Toyos got louder than they were new.

The Coopers are much quieter than BFG MT's, Dunlops, Goodyear MT's (tried them all).

The BFG AT's are definitely quiet. Not as good looking as the Coopers, though.

i'm actually considering the STT's. I understand them to be quiet considering what they are. How do they handle?

I also run the Cooper ATR 315/70/17's on my truck about 8k miles. I tow a 25 ft Terry TT about 7K no prob. road noise not a prob. ATR's good so far.

I have the STTs like stated previously. They are wearing OK, maybe a little faster than my Toyo M/Ts. For the price I didn't think they were that bad, I think I got the 285/70R17s for about $190 a piece all said in done. When I bought them they had a buy three, get one free deal going.

I have the STTs; I didn't think they were that loud considering the aggressive tread they have. I’d air ‘em up a bit if you plan to stay on the hardtop.
