I installed the cool down timer this weekend. I took out the ashtray insert and drilled a small hole (1/2") in the back on the ash tray flip down housing and the thing set in there like it was made for it. It wired in and that was very easy except I had to extend the wires in order to rout them the way I wanted to. I really think the wires should be a lot longer in case one wanted to install it toward the right side of the interior. I used the e-brake option and this thing is really handy for everyday use as far as just wanting to run into a convenience store and leave the truck running. All in all it is a highly recommended item (but please lengthen the wire!)

 

Can you adjust the time it runs? How long can you leave it (the longest setting)
I'd like to have something for at least 15 minutes if not 30.

 

You have 2,4 & 6 Mins. I imagine if you contacted the supplier he could make you a custom version. There is very little to it and it may be a simpe as changing a resistor value in the unit. I haven't taken mine apart and don't plan to but if I had to bet I would say it would be easily done.

 

Not to sound stupid but how does this timer work and who makes them?? What is the difference in just leaving key in and locking door with remote?

 

Howard Van Fleet makes them he is amember of this fine fine group. He also advertises in the advertisers block , I bought one and it is great.

If you leave you key in yeour vehicle and it is running and it is stolen even if it is locked in most states your insurance company doesnt have to pay .

Howards timer allows you to remove the key and in an automatic it locks everything in the steering column just like normal but the truck runs for 2 or 4 or 6 mintes

If you have an insurance company that refuses to pay if your vehicle is stolen becuase you left the keys in it, then its time to switch companies. Insurance companies have the right to refuse coverage if your actions are criminal, not stupid.

 

The unit leaves oly the engine running w/o any accessory items and when it times out the truck is as if you shut it off. I have been finding it very convenient for the many convenience stops I make. Were it me I would make it a standard diesel item. Still, the wires should be longer. for $70.00 put it on the truck you own.

I installed one last week. I placed it just above the e brake.

I do like the use of it. If the e brake is released it shuts down the engine. Cannot be engaged if e brake is not set.

The hardest part of the installation was deciding were to mount the box.

 

A discovery I made after the installation of my cool down timer is that the verification of door lock/unlock is no longer active. The doors DO lock & unlock bu tthe lights don't indicate this? Anyone-w- a solution? I will call the mfg co but thought I would put it out to this group of higher intellect as well

Anyway I will make the wires a little longer, I would like to know how many people, have had wire problems. Please PM me if you had not enough wire, just enough or had to cut a bunch off. Also what year trucks do you have.

Please excuse the newbie question, but why would you want to leave your diesel motor running while you go into a store? I've seen this done, but never understood why.

 

Maybe I should explain that you use this device to let the engine run and still remove the key and lock the truck/car. It is super convenient, saves starter motor wear and lets the turbo cool. I welcome others to chime in-w-other benefits. I personally feel it would be a great optional feature and since having it would not do w/o. I really like the one picture of the guy's installation where he integrated it in the dash by disassembling it and placing the components within the dash panel.

 

In oregon we are the same as most states, they do have to pay, makes no differents keys in or out, ask your agent thanks.

 

I agree a cool down timer would be a great factory option but I don't understand why it's necessary all the time.

I do plan on buying one after I get my truck.

But, if the turbo wasn't spinning it's not hot.

Turbos only spin up if the tachometer spikes up, telling the engine it needs more power.

During regular driving the turbo won't even spin and therefore won't get hot.

Tell me if I'm wrong.
