Question ? on checking the power steering fluid

I was checking my fluids today and I was wondering how u properly check the PS fluid. The dodge manual was no help.

Do u take the dipstick out wipe off and screw it back in and then check it again or pull it out wipe it off and insert the dipstick but do not screw it down and then check. I just want to make sure im doing it right so as not to run low.

Reason i ask is all our type 3 fire engines at work u pull it out and reinsert without screwing it back in to get the proper reading just wanted to c if we r the same

I think you'll be fine measuring either way because the difference in how far the dipstick goes into the reservoir when it's screwed in vs. not isn't much. The cap fastens to the reservoir in the same way that a radiator cap locks, in that it just turns and locks with tabs on the cap.

After first removing and clearing the stick, reinstall and screw it down. Then remove again and check level. Doing the the other way may leave the reservoir level low which can lead to Power Steering and Brake Failure. After topping off if needed make sure stick/cap is screwed down and secure. These systems will built enough pressure that will remove your stick/cap while going down the road.

I will always get different (low) readings if I do not screw the dust cap down and then check again. Just do not leave it to chance. Anther place to look is the Owners Manual.

Thinking about sucking out all the flewid I can and adding new. A good idea at 80k miles? maybe do it a few times.

Yes do that a couple times then install a Magnefine filter in the booster return line and it'll be good for another few years at least:

I sucked all the fluid out of mine and just topped it back off. I heard some guys saying to be careful with the screen thats at the bottom. I didn't see anything when I did mine, but I wasn't looking very hard for it either. I didn't notice any contanimates in the fluid when I drinaed mine. I think a filter may not be nessecary but it sure wouldn't hurt.

I sucked *** much as I could and just refilled also. I did it at 45k miles and the fluid looked real good still. Just make sure to use ATF+4 and not regular power steering fluid.
