Cant make up my mind on tires

So I am getting close to needing tires, I cant make up my mind on what brand or size. I like the nitto dura grapplers but with my truck I think they may look odd. I would like to stay around a 34'' tire, I have Maxxis buckshot mudders on it now in a 305/70/17.

Nothing affect performance more than tires. Ask any rally car driver; choosing the wrong tire often costs you the race.

No tire can be best at everything, so it's always a comprimise. Before picking a tire, pick your goals. Then find the tire that matches your goals.

Why do you have a mud tire now?

Its what was on the truck when I got it. I drive almost all on road, with a little bit of pasture here and there. I think a 34" tire fits the truck well, but do you think that a on road tire will look odd on my truck?

Try the nitto HD grappler tire. They don't look as "mall x 4 " as the dura grappler, they grip well, and they wear well. I have a set on my 01, and they have been pretty much bulletproof. A true work truck tire. They are also reasonably quiet on the highway.

Agree with Pind if you're worried about the appearance. As far as size goes, I'd say your best bet is probably a 285/75 R17. It's a little narrower than what you've got now but a bit taller, both of which will help your highway mileage.

I gotta say though...for a highway tire, the Dura Grappler doesn't look all bad and it's usually best to put function over form.

I have been looking for tires for months now and have never even seen this tire, I don't know if I can get it down here. Just found a few pics from Canada. I like it, its almost a mud terrain with siping.

The Dura Grappler seems to be a good tire. Falls right about in the middle for price. Some of them have a warrenty, and some don't. The P metrics have a good warrenty, and the LT have a mid level warrenty.

Seems to be a middle of the road choice.

I prefer the Michelin LTX tire. Doesn't look as agressive as a mud tire. But an excellent all around tire, with excellent traction even in snow and ice. Comes with a 60K warrenty. A bit more expensive, though.

285/75 size Nitto Terra Grappler or Toyo AT will probably be a good happy middle and keep your truck 4x4 capable if you really need to use it. Will look good too if you are worried about that.

I`ve had both brands & would go with the toyo 285/75/17. This is my second set & they wear & drive great.

I just looked at the Cooper ATP and it almost looks like a terra grappler, I don't know how I have looked at tires for so long and not seen some of these tires. I kinda have a bad taste in my mouth with nitto from my last set on my old truck. Seems like they are hit or miss, some guys get great mileage out of them some guys get crap mileage. I e mailed nitto about it and I got the normal won't fess up to a problem with the tire crap. I am looking at the Goodyear duratracs now, they make them in a 285/70/17 or a 315/70/17 both a load range D. I don't want any rub so I may need to find a set of H2 wheels before I get tires to make the 315s work.

E rated is recommended.

I remember on my D rated BFG 315 allterrains I had to keep the fronts at max and the rears at like 40-43 or something to keep the tire sag looking appropriate.

Just my opinion.

How about the Toyo? Everyone seems to like them.

I've run Durras for about 60k and loved them. But they were a lot harder and stiffer tire. Talked to guys at Nitto and they say this maybe better for me for my driving on off road. http://www.nittocrosstek.com/
but I will see a slight less life but not to much loss compared to my Durras. I've got 8k on them now and they wear very well and minimal tire wear, wearing just like Durras if I was to guess. So far very happy.

I have the dura's, and they are absolutely a "on-road" tire, but saying that they are also wearing extremely well... They are hard, they are OK in wet weather, OK in snow, but completely suck off the road, even though I was in soft mud they didn't even have enough bit to dig down... this was actually a good thing because it made extraction alittle easier...

I bought this truck to tow my toys to the woods, not to take into the woods, so these tires work great for my use and they don't look bad at all on the truck... I gave a bored neighbor kid a couple bucks and a bottle of silver touch up paint to paint the fake bolt heads molded in the sidewalls and alot of un-informed people think thier part of the rims/bead locks...

its about the best picture I got of what I am talking about..

Yet another tire I have never seen, the crosstek looks like a good compromise between on road and off road. I don't know how I have not seen all these tires. Thanks for all the input guys.
