Can you wire up rear view camera to the factory Nav screen ?

Hi all -

I am thinking about getting a rear view camera for my Megacab. But also I like the stock factory Nav in the dash. My SLT did not come with it, but maybe one day I'll get one and replace the stock radio. My question is if the Nav screen can work with rear view camera ?

Thanks

The NAV would have to be converted to a video input for the camera to work. I know that it will not work without this conversion since its illegal to drive with video visible from the drivers seat. There is a company that you would have to send in the Head unit (NAV) to them and for about 600.00 they can convert it to accept a video input. I have looked into this for the simple reason of wiring in the rear DVD to the NAV (same idea having it accept video input). I just went down to the local stereo shop and bought a 7" monitor and cut a hole in the dash on the passenger side and wired that into the rear DVD, back up camera coming soon. Cost 300.00.

Very nice install!!!

I looked into the conversion too but in order to watch DVDs you have to get an external player and mount it under the seat. It won't play DVDs in the headunit....

This T.V. plays off the factory DVD thats mounted on the roof. When im driving all I have to do is toggle between the CD, Sirius, to the DVD and it plays the DVD on the front T.V. I dont have to even open the rear DVD screen for the front one to work. Almost like it was meant to be

Is that mounted on the Airbag cover???? If it is do you have the ability to turn off the Airbag.. I would hate to have that monitor come at me in an accident... (on my 05 that would be the airbag cover)

I am insulted that no one found my post on this VERY topic!! ...

Hitchcam will do the conversion for you so that you can use one of their cams on your head unit. I was having mine done when I decided to change the Alpine W200 and soon the W205 that already have rear cam inputs. They can do it in about 3 or 4 days (or at least they were going to do it for me in that time).

Very nice clean install Jay. Did you have to sacrifice the passenger airbag?

For $100 Wal-mart has back up camera that mounts to the license plate and the little monitor plugs into the cig lighter and works great for backing up. It is wirless.

I put one of those on my wife's van and it works OK. It easily gets distorted though if there is a cell phone close by....

I'm guessin it depends greatly on where you are and what the video is. Here in CA, "27602. (a) A person may not drive a motor vehicle if a television receiver, a video monitor, or a television or video screen, or any other, similar means of visually displaying a television broadcast or video signal that produces entertainment or business applications, is operating and is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver's seat, or is operating and visible to the driver while driving the motor vehicle."

There are exceptions for a vehicle information display, gps, maping system, "A visual display used to enhance or supplement the driver's view forward, behind, or to the sides of a motor vehicle for the purpose of maneuvering the vehicle" and more. To read it yourself, go to http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27602.htm .

IMO the $100 cheapo is not worth the money. The wireless signal is bad even at 6 feet away and the screen is so small you can't get any depth perception at all. I found it to be completely useless for backing up (or any other activity for that matter!).

Jay, that's an awesome looking install. Cheers to you for having the ***** to cut that huge hole in your dash! I'm curious about the airbag though?

I remember when a couple MORONS in CA wrecked and then their familes sued Alpine over the video thing. I had their first flip-out head unit ever, the CVA-1000 and have had all of their top of the lines one since and I remember the first that needed the bypass switch. All because some people can't except they had moronic off-spring, or siblings, or what have you. I'm sorry that person X died, but come on, he didn't HAVE to watch the video whilst driving JUST BECAUSE it was on. He had a choice and he made it; and it was a stupid one. That doesn't mean, "make it illegal so it won't happen again". It means, educate people on responsible use so it doesn't happen again. I mean, why has this country come to the rediculous and fallacious conclusion that protecting the most stupid from his/herself is the way to go.
