Calculating HP?

I read a couple articles in a diesel mag and musclecar about how to calculate hp with 1/4 mile times and vehicle weight. They say it is a very accurate way and gets you close as + or - 10hp. So I tried it and came up with 687hp at the crank and close to 600hp at the wheels. Is this really possible. I read all these threads about making 600hp and the list of mods you need and I'm still short a few. By the way my time was 12.92 at 7500lb if you want to do the math.
