Hey guys. I live in California and am looking in to buying a truck from Washington state. It's a 2005 Dodge Cummins and was wondering if anyone knows if there were different versions of the 05? Was there a 48 (or 49) state version and a California version or were all 2005's 50 state legal?

I am asking because California law dictates that if it was not specifically made for California, it is illegal to buy or sell it in California. If this truck is a non California version, this deal is dead. This is the information per the California Bureau of Automotive Repair.

All of the Trucks from 04.5 and up are 50 state vehicles.. The 03-04 are the only 3rd Gen that had different Emission models...
So an 05 is fine for CA...

 

I agree with the above post but I would run the VIN so that you had written documentation in case you run into a butt in the Calif. bureaucracy

We bought a van from out of state and almost didn't get it titled and licenses here in Texas. I'll never do that again.

 

My truck is an '05 which I purchased new in St. Louis and brought back in to California. Although there is no physical difference between a CA truck vs 49 state truck for that model year, a new CA truck must still have the CARB certification sticker under the hood. I'm told that the only difference is that with CARB certified trucks, every single truck goes through emissions testing at the factory, whereas with 49 state trucks, only something like 1 in 30 get tested. The St. Louis dealer I purchased from had to specifically order a CA truck for me.

But in your case since you're buying used the CARB certification doesn't matter as long as the truck has at least 7500 miles on it, which if I remember right is CA's measure of it being used (also may be a time measure, like 6 months old or something). In any case I'm sure the truck you're buying has more than 7500 miles on it so you will have no problem regardless of whether its CARB certified or not.

 

Get the VIN # and call your DMV they could tell you up front.. Makes notes of who / when you spoke to them..
