The dealership is offering me an extended warranty (5 yrs/100,000 miles) bumper-to-bumper on the truck in my signature. What's the general concensus on these. I think the price they are asking is around $1,600. We just bought the truck a few days ago and it's our first CTD !!

 

that 1600 is a heckuva boomb start fund, you can do a lot with that, intake exhaust and a quad race..... might even have some left for some bigger tires... I got the extended, kinda regret it, as soon as something goes, they will most likely blame the afteermarket stuff and say no go warranty

 

There's a reason why they try to push that warantee on you. Because they know odds are you won't need it and they pocket the money, or, they just won't honor it based on some stupid BS, and again, they pocket the money...

 

And the mark-up on the extended warranty ranges from 70-100%...a cash cow for the dealer.

I did not get the extended warranty because I have the 7/70 and Cummins warranties the motor to 100k. By the time the 7/70 is up I'll know how to fix anything on this truck myself.

Why spend $1600.00 for nothing?

Thanks for the advice, guys. I kinda figured that I'd know within the 3 yr/ 36,000 period if the truck was gonna be a lot of trouble or not. If it is, I'll get rid of it and try another. Yall have pretty much backed up what I was leaning towards.

 

Yeah, all the expensive stuff is covered to either 70k or 100k. Thats the way I looked at it.

 

O6 does not have 7/70, just 3/36.

 

I bought my 06 used with 37k on the clock so I was out of bumper to bumper coverage. My truck was a certified Chrysler unit so I received a 80/80 power train warranty from DC.
I purchased the bumper to bumper 80/80 from the dealer just for my own piece of mind.
There are plenty of things besides the power train that cost big bucks these days.
I paid $895 for mine. My dealer is a five star one and the warranty is from his own company, not a secondary one from someone I don't know.

 

the problem is not the warranty, but the technical knowledge to perform the work.

so you MAY be under warranty, but your dealer can't fix it due to lack of knowledge.
or lack of caring, or can't repeat the problem....get my drift?

I bought the extended warranty on my 02 and it paid for itself. I had the following replaced under extended warranty:

Lift pump
Valve body in the transmission
Front-end seals
Injector pump

The truck had 102000 when I traded it for my 06 and yes I purchase the extended coverage. I did negotiate the price, I got it for 1300.00

 

Try these two places they are usually WAY cheaper than the Dealer. And you can sometimes get your dealer to match their prices. You can buy a Chrysler OEM extended warranty from any dealer in any state or over the Internet.
If you are going to buy the waranty I think the general opinion is to get an OEM Chrysler waranty.

I can't imagine a dealership that could not fix a problem with my truck.
If they did have a not caring attitude I don't think they would be in business very long.
It is my understanding service makes them more money than sales.
I have never had a problem on any vehicle that the dealer could not fix. Granted it might have taken a while on some but in the end it was fixed to my satisfaction.

I am sure there are some instances of dealers like this but it is not something you hear about very often.

The extended warranty I purchased was simply for my piece of mind.

I carry full coverage auto insurance for the same reason. Not planning on needing it, but sure glad I have it if I do need it.

 

I opted for the 5/50,000 bumper to bumper with a $50 deductible on my truck. Got it for $495. I fugured if one or two things needed replaced, chances are it would have paid for itself. I got the extended warranty on my last Dodge truck (a gasser) and had the bottom end of the engine replaced and the trans rebuilt. Saved me a total of about $6,000!!! Good piece of mind IMHO. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!!!

 

If it's a DC warranty it sounds like a good deal. i just used mine to have the power seat track replaced, and i got a rental at no charge (F-150 4X4). I will need to use it again as my steering wheel is starting to peel. no regrets here.
