Broken Valve stem?

I had a flat rear tire yesterday and when I took it to get repaired they could not find a nail or anything, when they sprayed it down with water, the valve stem tipped over - it was cracked almost all the way through? I have not been off pavement since Labor Day weekend, how does a valve stem crack?

Anyway - while I was at Tire Discounter, the manager tried to sell me 35" BFG A/T KOs, mounted, balanced, and lifetime road hazard warranty for $1000 out the door. Good Deal? 285 BFGs were $800...

Thats what I thought - I told him I would be back when I was ready to drop that money - it's getting close to christmas, so I gotta see how much I spend on that.

How bad is the rubbing with 35's on stock rims and suspension? Do I need to be concerned with DW with the BFGs?

truckman,
I had the same thing happen with my stock tires on. The funny thing is, me and a buddy were standing next to my truck shooting the @##@ and all of the sudden we heard this hissing sound coming from the truck, walked around and the valve stem just blew out and the tire went flat as a pancake. The oddest thing??

When I first bought my truck, stock tires, I had a valve stem problem. After the guy at the tire store installed a new, higher pressure valve stem in that wheel I had him do all of them. The valve stems are not heavy duty enough for our weight. The ones he pulled out were the type they put into cars, not for trucks, let alone heavy trucks. Everyone needs to change them out.

The guy brought my broken stem in to show me and he said they were already heavy duty valve stems and he said he had never seen it happen like that.

But, for anyone who does not have heavy duty - yes I would agree - go get them... luckily my truck was sitting in the driveway when I discovered it and I was not rolling down the road....

If your valve stems did not have a nut to retain them on the outside of the rim, they were not heavy duty.

If you still have the factory wheels, the BFGs he quoted you were 315/70-17s and closer to 34" than 35". On the factory wheel you may not rub at all. I ran Toyo 325/70-17s (a true 35"x13" tire) on a set of H2s with no lift and had very little rubbing on the inner fender.

So the rub would be nothing to worry about? I would love to eventually get a nice front levelling kit, but for now that is a little out of my price range.

THanks for the help.

With the 315/70/17's I noticed on BFGs site they say use a 8.5-10 inch wide rim, the factory rims are only 8 inches wide, will that cause a problem?

Nah, you'll be fine. Just keep them rotated.

Thats weird, I had a valve stem fail also, started to leak for no apparent reason (drivers side front) took it to a local garage and had my friend replace it rather than make an appt at the dealer. I thought this was just a freak thing, maybe its really not......

$1000 for those tires is a great price, go git em.
