Brake Job..... soon?
I have a young 87,000 miles on my truck but still haven't done any work to the brakes. No pads, rotors..... nothing. How long do they typically last? What type of replacement parts are good? The factory parts must be tough to beat.

The factory installed brake pads are very robust and tend to last a long time; however, it will depend on driving style and if you tow alot. If you go to a Dodge dealer, they will sell the valu-line pads which are rubbish and a waste of money. I believe Steve White motors (online store) carries the factory pads as others have mentioned in other threads regarding pads.
I currently run EBC Greenstuff pads and rotors on my trucks and will purchase them again, if necessary. EBC products are available from online vendors or just stop by Pep Boys and order them. They typically have them the next day. Pep Boys also has online printable coupons available for brakes and rotors each month. The factory pads were tough to beat until I installed EBC'S.

I replaced mine with the value line pads and don't really have any complaints although you can tell a small difference between the OEM's and the value line. If you look in the wiki I did a write up on how to do the rears, lots of pics.

Brake Job
Just did a brake job on my 07 2500, found the front slides froze up and overheated the rotors, replaced the calipers, slotted rotors, and premium pads from NAPA, truck only had 44,000 miles, also had to replace both right ball joints, easy to bleed lines out, my 12 year old son helped. Brakes ran around $550 with the slotted rotors

factory brakes are pretty good., then value line is ok...
i went with EBC rotors and green stuff pads and will do those from now on. good stopping power, no noise, and low dusting. And rotors are said to last for two sets of pads... (something i have yet to be able to do, all rotors i have ever tried to turn were under spec.)
been putting them on everything, so far no problems with EBC (two dodge 2500 CTDs and a GMC with the duramax)

Brakes last until they wear out. And they wear out according to use. If you commute to wok on the highway 100 miles a day, the brakes will last a long time. If you tow a heavy trailer around town all day, they don't last long.
I replaced mine with parts from Autozone. Reasonable price, excellent performance, and life time warrenty. Pretty hard combo to beat.
Always replace the associated hardware - sliders and such. They may look good, but can cause the caliper to bind, and you'll smoke the brakes.

I had excellent luck with ATE pads on my 2nd gen with the 3rd gen brake mod, stock pads stock rotors on a second gen would last me 3-4 months and 23,000kms(intown courior truck)
running ATE pads on my 3rd gen, they bite/no noise/no dust. will keep using these as I know they work for me, even when abused

Granted I pulled a 53' triple axle trailer for over 200k miles (almost 2 yrs) and then ditched it in favor of a daily commute job, I never had to replace the pads until the truck hit 260k. At that point the "squealers" had started hitting the discs. Replaced with some jobber units from Advance Auto Parts and at 300k now I can start to feel the onset of a having the rotors turned. Hey, if a set of brakes and rotors lasts me 300k miles I can't complain at all!!!

I'll be doing mine this weekend. I got 70k out of the originals. I'm replacing them with EBC Green Stuffs.
BTW - what would the implications be if I didn't turn the rotors?

Why spend good money to carve perfectly good metal off the rotors unless you're having rotor-related "issues?"
I've never turned a rotor unless its warped. Well, unless you count the time I left my Hawk Black race pads on my mustang and after driving around town for a couple of weeks I'd cut 1/8" deep pad-sized grooves into both the inner and outer sides of the rotors. Hard race pads work like lathe tools until you get the pads up to race temperature.
