Well, 17x9" wheels doesn't make much difference, these tires are too soft for heavy trucks. I am hoping to get 30,000 out of mine, pretty sad. I will be buying Procomps next time (50,000 mile warranty).

tire press

I have the 35 12.5 r17 BFG MT's on the stock wheels, they are pretty much the same carcass with different tread. I run the front @50 all the time and the rears @40 when empty/50 loaded. they will set down on the whole tread @ 40 psi. The stock rims are too narrow and the rearend is too light when empty to make the whole tire touch @ max pressure. They are rated to carry 6k. apiece when at max pressure and you might have 3000 lbs total on the rear when empty.

mine are wearing almost dead evenly across the tread, but i am running between 38-42 front, 36-40 rear [depending on temp outside, i am a slacker and tire psi doesn't get checked regularly]

My tires wear perfectly straight across but I do have one row of tread that for some reason, on the left front position, has a corner of it that rips off of the tire! It's not the outside or innermost tread rows either. It's the second row in from the outside. Maybe I'll post a pic later. It's very strange.....
With a Senior Member with as many posts as yourself....we feel it necessary to keep the gentlemen in the upper echelon(sp?), as close to the straight and narrow as possible.

Now, I see alot of folks running the BFG's. I didn't have good luck with mine. I found that the rubber compound was just too soft and longevity was less than desirable for me. As stated previous, I found the BFG's fantastic when new, but found traction to go completely downhill as soon as they started to show any sign of wear. This however is just my personal opinion from personal observation and experience.

Whoo Hooo, I gots me a 5 star rating !! I'm glad someone found this thread usefull.

My main reason in posting this was to prove a point. I've seen many people post on here how the BFG 315/70/17 fit great on the stock Dodge wheels, when in all actuality they really don't. Sure they will mount, but as you can see in my pictures they aren't a great fit.

BFG rates a minimum of 8.5" wide wheels for the 315/70/17 AT tires. Dogde stock wheels are 8". So the wear in the pictures is a result of only .5" (yes 1/2 of an inch) difference in the recommended minimum wheel size and the stock wheel size. I've seen more abuse of this in the Ford and Chevy forums. Ford trucks come with 7" wheels, and Chevy trucks come with 6.5" wheels. I laugh at how many people say they put 315/75/16 tires on the stock 7" and 6.5" wheels. They'll say that they fit fine. Then I'll post and say something on the contrary and I generally get accused of being a Ford or Chevy hater. I've seen what a 1/2 inch difference makes, and those guys are running wheels that are a full 1 inch smaller than what the manufacturer recommends.

Anyway, I'm really surprised that no one else has really brought up this issue with the BFG 315/70/17 tires. Would I buy them again ? If I can get H2 take off like these, then absolutely. However, if it were on my dime from a tire store, then I would stick to 285/70/17 BFG AT.

Sure we are pushing the limit but how do you explain that most of us are having a perfectly flat wear pattern while a few of us are not? I can't explain it but as it looks now I will get 45-50,000 miles out of my tires. Honestly, they wear so flat I don't even know why I rotate them....

On the other hand, I had bought a new 92 CTD and it wore out the rear Goodyear tires within 15,000 miles! The rears! I put some bigger tires on it (the absolute cheapest 33/12.5/16.5" mud tires) and they lasted about 50,000 miles until I got rid of it. It was no tire burner either w/ 3:54 gears and 5 speed... Sometimes you just get a bad batch of tires I guess....

I've run the 285's, and they look the same as your pitcure. Most of the wear you are seeing on the edges is from turning, IMHO. During a turn the sides are pressed into action more than going straight.

What I find interesting about this thread is the variation of tire pressure. I run mine at 65 PSI all the way around. The tires are rated for that according to what I read on the side of the tire. The firmer the tires the better the milage. Why would anyone be at 40PSI?

I'm not trying to start a fight just wondering.

I just put 285/70/17 BFGs on my truck. I wanted to try the 295 Nittos but every place I called had them back ordered for at least a month. I am running 65 psi and will rotate every 5,000. I'll post some pictures.

I agree with BigBlueDodge, the 8" rims are questionable at best for the 315s. I have them on the stock rims because I could not find any rims/wheels with close to stock back spacing. At least not any I could afford. I do believe that stock back spaceing/offset is much better on the front suspension unless you go with a complete suspension lift kit. Something else I could not afford right now.

My boss has 17x9 wheels with 315s on his furd 250 4x4 powerjoke and the fit looks better, the tread is all on the ground with 50lbs and the wear is even.

I will probably do a full lift in the future and then change to a wheel and tire combination that match better.

I have 46k (that is the uncorrected odo reading) on mine and there is alot of tread left. all wearing even except one, I think a belt broke in the middle, the middle is bald, and the outside there is about half tread. other 3 look great and I'd be suprised if they need to be replaced before 65k. Heck, I haven't even rotated them in over 24k miles
